What information can we share to the parents of minors?

I had an overdose recently which involved a minor. The parent had no clue whatsoever about the kids use of drugs and met us at the hospital. Is it ok if we told the parent what happened or does this violate some sort of confidentiality law?

IMHO, I would share with the parent everything you are doing or did treatment and transport wise. I would leave the diagnosis and discussions on the 'could be' to the physician and staff at the hospital, or to law enforcement if they are involved.

Parents are entitled to know everything about their minor child's health and medical care because legally the child is incapable of making decisions for themselves.

^^^ if they are minors the only thing i won't share would be sexual activity, hospital obviously gets everything.

If the parent met you at the hospital, that is the point where I would direct them to the admin or nurse and let them take it from there.

If they're emancipated or have had a child and/or are pregnant you can't tell the parents anything. That's going to be a little different everywhere depending on state law.

Otherwise it's fair game and their right to know what's going on with their child.

On scene, they see as much as I do. If there are drugs or paraphernalia or whatever. They can make and operate under the same assumptions as I would.

If at the hospital and they had no on scene knowledge, then as I stated above....and it is the cleanest method....refer them to the Hospital Staff.

100%, especially if you don't know the state law or laws that may exist!
