World's largest FD: Fire Department of New York (City) - 11,600 Firefighters housed in 221 Fire Stations

US Largest FD: Fire Department of New York (City) - 11,600 Firefighters housed in 221 Fire Stations

World's largest EMS: This use to be the NY EMS before FDNY took over. Fire Department of New York (City)- 3,000 Paramedics and EMTs

US Largest EMS: Suprise it is FDNY with 3,000 Paramedics and EMTs

Arky, where did you get those stats? Is there a place to look up stats like that for other depts?

I used google and just used the words you provided for the search.
World FD- http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Where_is_the_world's_largest_fire_department
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Fire_Department

US FD- If the FDNY is the world's largest it is logical to assume it is going to be US largest also. Chicago is #2.

World and US EMS- this was a hard one to find but the FDNY claim 3,000 Paramedics and EMTs and I have been unable to find an organization with more.

Hope that helps

FDNY isn't the largest in the world. Especially since no distinction was made between volunteer and professional.

The Country Fire Service is a volunteer based fire service in the state of South Australia in Australia.

The CFS consists of around 434 brigades and 16,400 volunteers (11,800 fire fighters, 3,400 Auxiliary and 1000 cadets).

CFA is one of the world’s largest volunteer-based emergency services. There are around 58,000 volunteer members supported by over 400 career fire fighters and officers and more than 700 career support and administrative staff.

Today the Service comprises over 2,100 volunteer rural fire brigades with a total membership of just over 70,000. In addition, salaried staff are employed to manage the day to day operations of the Service at Headquarters, regional offices and district fire control centres.

You are correct in this but I figured that the OP was searching for paid only. Thank you for adding them JPINFV and I was not trying to slight them in any way, shape, or form.

How are we defining size? Number of paid employees? volunteers? Call volume? Number of stations? ambulances? Size of coverage area?

How about Magen David Adom in Israel--- over 9,000 active volunteers (FR thru paramedic) and 1,500 paid staff. With 550 vehicles (500 of which are straight ambulances, others are support, for MCIs etc.). For a country the size of New Jersey, this is amazing. Per Capita, they may be the largest, based on staffing.

What about other international EMS systems?

I was avoiding linking that thread as it turned into a free for all hate fest lol.

So true, but it has some good info. Like most of their threads...eventually they wander far enough from the important stuff.

(sorry but I have to... # 100 !)
