Hey everyone!

I'm in the middle of my EMT course and right now I wear scrub bottoms because I already had them from volunteering in the ER, but now I want to invest in a pair of EMT pants.

I was wondering do companies have their own uniform that we must purchase from them, or can we buy certain things on our own? I recently bought EMT pants in black, but I think most wear "midnight" which is a darker blue, yes?

I live in Orlando FL and I'll hopefully be working for Rural Metro. I have my first clinical with them on June 1st ^_^

Also what am I expected to buy as far as supplies? I bought a stethoscope and just got it in the mail today - boy did I feel like a 5 yr old on Christmas morning!!

But do I need any of the following:

-Penlight
-Trauma Shears
-BP cuff

Or does it depend on the company again?

You do not need any of that.

Wait until you have a job and then what you need is supplied.

It will depend on the company. Some give you an allowance for uniforms. Some provide shirts but no pants. Some make you buy their shirt. I wouldn't go to crazy on the pants you buy off the starting block. Odds are you will go through several kinds before you find a brand that you like. Just get a decent pair of ****ies from walmart to start with or if you have an academy sporting goods store near you they have a decent pair of cargo pants for 16 bucks that I wore for a long time before I finally found a better pair I like. Trauma shears are kinda optional at least at first but a good penlight isn't a bad idea and unless you need a cuff to practice with I wouldn't bother buying one. Take the money your would spend on a cuff and buy an EMS field guide (ALS version) it will be useful and give you something to thumb through when you're bored.

edit
Actually AK is right they will probably provide you with everything including a penlight. Don't spend a ton of money until you start making some to replace it :)

The only thing I have purchased is a stethoscope. My company has a policy that the only personal equipment allowed are stethoscopes, shears and penlights. All of which are in several locations in the truck. Everything else were are to use what is supplied.
uniforms depend on the company. Some issue, some don't .

Like everyone said it's company dependent.

We get 4 class-A shirts, 4 summer uniform t-shirts, 3 pairs of pants, a jacket, a helmet and have extra stuff we can buy through the company for a decent price.

Will scrub bottoms get me through clinicals? If not, I'll check out the Goodwill or Patios Closet. I'm a senior in college so moneys tight, as usual.

Thanks for all the input! I'll definitely hold off on supplies. As for the ALS handbook, do you have any suggestions?

If your school doesn't have a policy ask your instructor . Some services have a dress code for ride alongs.

You can get a solid pair of ****ies at Walmart for like 20-30 bucks. Compared to 80+ for a good pair of EMS pants. I wore ****ies all through clinicals for Basic and Intermediate. We were issued uniforms for Medic School.

You don't need an ALS handbook if you are a basic student. It wont make sense and wont help you learn. I don't carry one but that's my preference. Only a protocol book in my pocket and on my phone.

All personal preference though.

Thank you all! You've been a great help :)

That's how these threads are supposed to go. Not end in a giant pissing match. Glad we could help bud.

What he said ^^^ We require white polo or button down shirt, black shoes/boots and blue/black pants.

With that said it makes me laugh when someone shows up in a white button down dress shirt and dress slacks.

Hope you don't like your clothes cause there's always a chance of messing em up pretty good.

I like that it has the complete list of common EMS drugs and a fairly comprehensive list of meds. They make a basic version but it's so incredibly well basic and the ALS version has all of that info plus the ALS stuff. I like to flip through the strip samples and match them up with strips we've run during my down time. It also has placement of 12 leads (which we get to do as basics where I'm at), Glasgow scale, burn chart, and a few other goodies that I don't use often but do occasionally break out.

Is it an app on your phone?
