This is why you a) get a good assessment and history if possible, and b) wake up gradually and oxygenate prior to awakening. I deal with a ton of opiate overdoses. Only one has ever flipped :censored::censored::censored::censored: on me after waking them up- I was brand new and unfamiliar with speedballing.
Yeah, I'd say the cop spooled things up a bit.
I also love the fire medics. "We told him if he's gonna be a jerk to just get out."
?
Really. Here's some Narcan. Now, get out of the truck.
Seriously though I love it how its just drag and narcan.
Why U no oxygenate / ventilate first?
Fire Chiefs are likely to back you up on this sorta thing.
We're doing a lot more treat and release heroin OD's these days.
He made it X minutes without breathing...what's another 3-4 going to hurt?! amirite? (They could have at least thrown a mask on him...)
We've been doing treat and release on heroine ODs for years, now. Haven't had any problems with it. Wake 'em up, make sure there's no issues once they're awake, then give them an IM dose before we leave.Really?
That's rather careless seeing how narcan has a shorter half life than opiates, especially in amounts to cause an OD.

I am disappointed in those firemedics.
You know better than that, really? If they were apenic for 3-4 prior to contact, you don't think that an additional 1-2 mins could be enough difference to result in cardiac arrest?

Too many of these running around in Texas.
If it helps at all, I'm not proud of myself.
Ok, sounds like the MDs in the area are willing to accept that risk. Because no MDs around FL that I know of are willing to do that at all.
h34r:Treat and release naloxone is safe...we've known this since the late 90's.
Seconded. Opiate ODs never go Full Goose Loco on me. Occasionally they want to fight, but usually they're just apologetic for wasting my time and ticked that I killed their high with Narcan.
Now, the bath salts guys behaved like lunatics. As did the guys who smoked sherm when I was back in Washington. Those folks were loony.
