I always like to be ahead and know what your talking about before class starts kinda thing. My course starts Jan 20; What is a few things that i can start studying on and memorzing now before my class starts.
Please not to hard, still trying to finish up some high school classes.

Start by getting a copy of whatever text is being used in your program along with a Taber encyclopedia. Read your text and Tabers as needed for words / concepts you don't understand.

Go ahead buy you books for class and stick with the anatomy and physiology chapter. If you get really bored with that study the pharmacology chapter but really only look at the different drugs you can administer. Learn the trade name, dose, indications, contraindications, route of administration, What forms is the drug available in, and adverse reactions.

I wouldn't worry about studying anything out side of those two chapters.

ORAL GlUCOSE

Trade Name: Glutose, Insta-glucose
Indications: Altered mental status, history of diabetes controlled by medication, Hypoglycemia, Ability to swallow
Contraindications: Unresponsiveness, inability to swallow, nausea, vomiting
Route of administration: Oral, buccal
How supplied: 500 ml liquid, paste, and gel
Adverse reactions: nausea, vomiting

This is how you'll make your drug cards in class. It wouldn't hurt to learn beforehand

I'm starting in January also. I have the books for the class, but what is a "Tabers" book?

take the time to study things you do not use everyday like general chemistry.

I'm going to be different and say to simply enjoy your time off. We get this question all the time from the incoming MS1's and none of us would ever suggest pre-studying.

But medical students already understand basic science. (I hope anyway)

I'm wondering how many times this question has been asked and answered?

A&P, biology, medical terminology, pharmacology. I don't know why RowdyB would suggest only knowing the drugs you can administer, there are a ton of meds out there that can have adverse reactions when mixed, at the basic level not so much, first thing that comes to mind is Cialas or Viagra mixed with nitroglycerine.

I was thinking about starting a med school study regimen after I finish my EMT-I class. Wanted to get a head start on histology and review a little biology. Is this a bad idea?

Yes. No matter how much you pre-read it won't help. If your considering medical school (in the US anyways as I can't speak to the rigor in other countries) for gods sake enjoy your time off.

If you want more opinions on the matter you can check out studentdoctor.net you can search that topic (don't start a thread because it gets asked 1000 times a month ) and see other opinions (though they are admittedly one sided).

If you read what I said you would see that I did suggest what you're saying as erectile dysfunction meds are contraindications of nitroglycerine.

A&P, and patho are huge. If you can get a good understanding of it before class it will make things alot easier
