This really says it all:
Doing something that causes you to die does not make anyone an automatic "hero" or automatically deserving of any respect or honor. It's crap like that belief that get's more people hurt or dead each year than anything.
Use your :censored::censored::censored::censored:ing head for a change. Give honor and respect to the people who deserve it, not to some poor schmuck who get's him/herself killed doing something that they shouldn't have.
The attitude that far, far to many people (especially whackers, jackasses, incompetants, wannabe-heros, and people without a clue) in this line of work have, that dying "trying to help" is acceptable and automatically makes the dead person a great man/woman is ridiculous and a crock.
Far to many times somebody does something stupid and pays the price for it. But instead or admitting that, holy crap, that guy screwed up, to many clueless boneheads will lionize the person, talk about how what they did was right, how they were "doing the job man!" and now they "get all my respect and honor." Which just helps lead more people to think that doing stupid things for stupid reasons is not only acceptable, but the expected way of doing it. See where that cycle goes?
There are inherent risks to this job no matter what. And sometimes people pay for that. But when somebody does something stupid, something that didn't need to be done, that shouldn't have been done, and gets dead behind it...why it happened needs to be looked at straight on. No more ignoring it to make yourself feel better.
Am I hostile when this topic comes up? You bet your *** I am. Way to many people have gotten hurt or dead with the reasons why being ignored because of that belief for me to stay quiet about it.
