I know this isn't a new concept, but for an EMT or P, I was wondering what your opinions were. Our new ambulance service just built a big location that all ambulances are going to be, all employees go to, then they're dispatched to their zones... I don't know where they hang out? The way it is now is that the ambulances are stationary in different parts of the city. I may add, if it makes any difference, that this new location is on the edge of one corner of the city.

Does anyone have experience with this and what do you think about it?

It'll probably be a SSM model. Many/most private companies work like that. You'll pick up and check your unit at the base station, then you'll get dispatched to an intersection or general area to post at until you get a call.

This. It is extremely common in SoCal.

You'll really get to... see... the place you call home. It's a whole new world when the sun goes down.

So... you just hang out in the truck? :) And ghost- yeah, I figured that out quickly. I did an overnight ER shift 3 weeks ago. It was awesome.

Yeah, typically. Or inside a business (restaurant, coffee shop, etc).

Youll learn who has and where the best WiFi is though! Hopefully you don't have diesel rigs, if I leave me window down to long breathing that crap idling I start getting nauseous :/

The best thing about posting is all the legroom in the cabs of ambulances. The room to recline in the front seats is really spectacular too.

Fortunately, most SSM systems have you chasing your tail across the city frequently enough you don't get to enjoy the luxurious bucket seats of the ambulances while stationary for too long.

Thanks for the input! I will feel extremely sorry for my partner then, ha ha! Please tell me they never put two newbie EMTs together on a truck............... ?

It depends. A good system shouldn't, but many systems will.

A very, very common deployment model in urban areas.

A very, very awful thing for employees.

The reason why I ask is that there's a person in my class... well, lets just say... has been a little off-putting. And knowing our luck by history we will get stuck together if this happens (praying it doesn't).

It can happen but shouldn't. You guys will have to find some kind of system that gets you through the 12 hours if you don't get along. Personally I just watch movies or TV on my cell, on calls though you have to be professional (of course)

Work for two places that have a central base and it works very well. Once we go in service we are based mostly at Fire stations. We use a modified SSM. The only time we post at a street corner is when we are the last rig.

We do SSM in Denver, but we also have extended cab ambulances. The seat reclines all the way back!

We do a hybrid. station/SSM type of deal. I work 24s so it sucks. Get yourself a tablet and know where the best WiFi is at. Best advice is learn to get comfy in an ambulance. I had an older partner who would go into the back and lay down as soon as we got to our area.

This is going to bw awesome. One of the course admins say that in one night (12 hours) we may only get 3-4 calls. Of course thats just what he said, however I imagine it wont be too far off.

Yeah until you get that night where it seems like people are dropping left and right. During spring break where I use to work we actually got so overwhelmed Fire had to ask for mutual assistance and so did we. It was a cluster ****. All it takes is that one night and your gonna wish 3-4 calls is all you get.
