I have looked into getting my EMR done so I can start my EMT many times over the past 7 years... I made the decision now is the time I can't keep putting it off. I have gotten to comfortable in the job I have ( not EMS related at all ) and I'm missing out on a passion inside of me to help people. I know it will be allot of hard work since I'm still working full time, I have a 1 1/2 year old son. But its worth it.

I completed my First Aid and CPR AED this weekend!

I will start my EMR Nov 7th and was looking for any advice.

In any area that I know, you can skip EMR completely to start EMT-B. Any particular reason why you're going EMR -> EMT?

Just study hard but don't go crazy... make family time.

EMT is not particularly hard. if your area permits it, you may want to consider going straight to EMT, with a little bit of effort you will breeze through EMT.

I live in Calgary Canada and from what I have found out I have to do my EMR as a prerequisite for EMT...

oh, thats cool. may even be a good thing, screen out a few of the students who don't belong in an emt class. In my area first responder is a 44 hour class, so you should be well on your way to getting your EMT. good luck

Bugaboo2: perhaps it would be helpful if you at least entered your Province and Nation in your location... That would have made it more clear to us that you're referring to Canada vs. the United States.

Otherwise, I think it's a good thing that you're pursuing your EMR certificate. Education is always a good thing. I hope you further your education in your Province beyond just "EMR", should you choose to continue in Emergency Medicine.

oh and for advice, don't sweat it. i used to teach a MFR course, and it is a piece of cake. not really a whole lot of advice to be given, unless you have any specific concerns/questions. like we said earlier good luck

good luck with your EMR and where are you taking your pcp program? are you taking the degree or just paramedicine?

The EMR course is not bad at all, the ACP exam is the fun part!! (not). Are you planning to go all the way and get your EMT-P?

EMT-B is the same scope as and EMR in Alberta.

I want to go all the way and go for my EMT - P.

I have not decided yet where I'm going to take my EMT at yet though... Any recommendations would be nice...

It all depends on who you ask.... The two big ones in Cowtown are SAIT and AHSTI. I went to SAIT and loved it. I plan on taking my EMT-P there next year. SAIT takes 10 months and costs around $4000 and AHSTI takes 3 and costs $6000. They are both CMA accredited.

With your little one, I think SAIT would be a better choice for your EMT. Only because AHSTI does rural practicum placements which can take anywhere from 2-8 weeks gone at one time. SAIT also does rural, but if they know you have a wee one at home, they can put you with Calgary EMS which has a 2 on 4 off rotation.

An Alberta EMT is the equivalent of a US EMT-I. The Alberta EMR is roughly the equivalent of a US EMT-B.
