Hello Everyone,

I will be taking my school EMT final this Thursday and hopefully sit for the NREMT exam in the next week or two. I already registered on the NREMT; only have to wait for my instructor to approve my school certification.

What's the EMT-B job outlook like in SoCal? I currently live in Orange County. I did my ambulance ride-a-long with Doctors and they seemed to be a squared away outfit. I will definitely apply with them but I don't want to throw all my eggs in one basket. I am married with 2 young children and need to get employed ASAP (that is if reputable companies are hiring).

Care is the other really good company in OC if you're willing to drive (depending on where you're located at). Care's central base is located near the 5-22-57 interchange, north of St. Joe's/CHOC.

Right now I'd avoid applying to Medix (located on the 5 near Doctor's base). While they are a good company, they just lost the majority of their 911 contracts and are most likely not hiring at the current time.

In general, however, these two companies pay the least out of the ambulance companies because of the number of people applying. The other two major companies in OC is Lynch and Pacific. People's opinions and experiences at these companies are extremely varied, so take everything with a grain of salt. On the bright side, these companies pay more than Care and Pacific. Additionally, two smaller companies exist, Emergency in Brea and Shoreline out of Huntington Beach.

One of the teaching assistants in my EMT-B class is employed with Medix. He gave me the 411 on the company and indicated he may not have a job at the end of the year.

My Daughter was discharged from CHOC in Orange a couple weeks ago for status asthmaticus. I saw a couple of crews from CARE working and they appeared to look professional. I will sumbit an application to them too.

I will research more on Lynch and Pacific.

Ill be Finishing up my Schooling this week too

What program/school did u go to? i went to Sadleback, if your willing to drive, id recomend checking up in LA county and San deigo Counties as well, because right now in the OC it seems like there is a great Influx of EMT's and not enough companies, so my recomandation is research research and take almost anything u can get. Id love to work for CARE, expecially in their LA county branch, they have a TON of 911 contracts.

and about Medix, i have a firend that works there, he's been telling me, they are going down hill, alot of people jumped ship from their company because they frankly dont give any hours expect to the people with the most seniority
 
Care is a top notch place to work. Before I was a medic I worked there for 2 years. Good equipment, solid management, they take care of their employees, pay is not the best, but they're the only outfit in OC I'd work for as a B.
 
My roommate works for Doctors.. they pay 8.40/hr. Full time is 72 hours/ week but it takes a while to get a third shift. He seems to like it. I want to work for them but have been procrastinating on it because I don't think I can take the pay cut right now (working in a non-EMS field)

To those that went to Saddleback, did you have Shadrach as a teacher? He's.. uh.. interesting...

Edit and +1 on the Medix sentiment. I am hearing that they might be losing their Mission Viejo 911 contract to Doctor's which is the last 911 contract they have.

8.40 no too bad, kinda lower than i expected, there are a few companies that pay around $10-11 range i belive in LA county

I woud love to work for doctors cause, they do south county and im very familar with the area, and on top of that i live right across the station, Literally...

I had Paul Gunns and John Chumacero, both amazing teachers, amazing stories, i deff wish i had them twice a week instead of once

I am attending Orange Coast Community College for my B-cert. I will check out LA county and see what hiring opportunities are up there.

I've heard that as well. How can management of a company that size with that many contract have never heard the concept of not biting the hand that feeds it?
 
If you are considering Doctor's, now would be the time to apply. They make the EMTs quit to attend medic school (don't give them LOA), and Saddleback is starting a new medic class in the Spring so they will be losing some of them. Just a heads up

I appreciate the heads up. I take my school final tomorrow and hopefully I can sit for the state exam in the next week or two. I am willing to drive to LA or SD county to get an early test date too.
