Good Evening,
I'm currently looking for a Paramedic school in my area of San Francisco. I've signed up for the next round at SF City College which is spring of 2012- which is a bit long for me, and they do a lottery, i don't want to wait that long only to be rejected cause someone who scored lower than me got in. :D Anyways, what other options do i have? From closest to farthest?

Thank you EMTLIFE!

Not sure exactly where you are in SF or how far you're willing to travel, but here are the one on the top of my head...

NCTI (Livermore or Milpitas) http://www.ncti-online.com/westcoastregion/index1.shtml
California EMS Academy (Redwood City) http://www.caems-academy.com/
Foothill College (Palo Alto) http://www.foothill.edu/bio/programs/paramed/
Westmed College (San Jose) http://www.westmedcollege.edu/

One possible newcomer is Fast Response in Berkeley but still no information posted...

Spring 2012 is certainly some time away but in the interim strongly consider working to use those EMT skills...private or 9-1-1 systems are fine, you really just want to get some contacts in the EMS world that will help with getting an internship and to know how to load/unload a gurney before you start medic school...(you might be already doing this so if so, good for you!)

GOOD LUCK!

Oh yes! Before working as an EMT, I was thinking of going straight to medic school. I landed a job a month ago and realized how much i've learned and how dumb it would be to go straight into medic. Thanks for the sugguestion! Blah - School sucks. I think westmed is like 10K$ :(

I think you'll find that most private programs are similarly priced - I recall that CA EMS Academy wanted us to shell out $15,000 at one point with the selling point that it was "all expenses paid" (i.e. book, ACLS, PALS, BTLS, etc.) but you also needed to take a separate pre-paramedic course.

re

If you dont mind commuting and staying over 1 night Both AST Paramedic Program ( Willows ) and NorthCoast EMS Paramedic program ( Arcata ) are both great programs. AST is a stand alone private program and Northcoast is now put on through College of the Redwoods. Both programs are and have been CoAEMSP approved/certified LONG before it was fashionable or required to do so. Both programs are Friday/Saturday
As for prices im pretty sure NorthCoast is still the least expensive program in the state at $2,000 dollars. While AST is a bit more expensive.

you could also go to Santa Rosa Junior College. They have a paramedic program at their Windsor campus.

Foothill (already mentioned) is a really good school, and is fairly cheap. However, avoid Westmed college. It's expensive and has a really bad reputation (which is important when it comes to working with your preceptor).

I've heard horrid things about westmed for their nursing program, is their medic program bad too?

Where are you attending school Anthony?

+1 on Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) or Napa Valley College (NVC)

SRJC is a 12 month (Full-time. 8 hours a day 5 days a week) program with 3 courses needed before enrollment. (Anat/ Physio/ Intro to Paramedic)

You could also try Napa Valley College. Their program is I believe 18 months (Part-Time. 8 hours a day on Fri-Sat) with 2 courses needed before enrollment. (Anat/Physio)

If you're willing to travel to Santa Cruz, Emergency Training Services may also be an option. They are, however, on the expensive side, as they're a private program, but it's an all-inclusive deal.

I havent heard anything about their nursing program, but have heard horrible things about their EMTP program. And talking to some of their students, they just dont get taught well. Im a foothill student, really good program. Puts out good medics.
