I have a few questions if anyone can help me out. I live out of state and am looking to move back to SoCal.

1. I don't have a California DL so I can't get the DMV printout everyone is asking for.

2. What is a California Ambulance Driver's License and can I get hired without one? (With the expectation to obtain one ASAP.)

3. What is the Medical Examiners Cert and again, how do I get one and can I be hired without it?

4. I have my National Registry. Does anyone know about reciprocity? Is it just pay a fee to the State and get a CA license or do I need to take a test?

Thank you in advance for your help!

If you're looking to move back to California, are you planning on getting a California drivers license? In general all of these are required to drive, but you might be able to be hired as an attendant only, or used as an attendant while getting the driving requirements hammered out.

1. Can you get a printout from the Texas DMV? That may go a long way as a stop gap while working everything else out.

2&3. http://dmv.ca.gov/dl/ambu_drvr_cert.htm It's a license endorsement that requires a written test, a background check (LiveScan, even though a separate LiveScan is required to be licensed by the state for your paramedic license), and a commercial driver level physical exam (the "medical examiners certification). The physical exam can be done by any physician in California. If you don't have a physician in California try contacting an industrial medicine clinic and they should be familiar with the form.

The form and the physical exam requirement can be found here: http://dmv.ca.gov/forms/dl/dl51.pdf

4. Sure, some companies will hire EMS provides who can't drive, but you are going to be limited to being the attendant on every call. This is company specific, so call around.

Go to whatever state your currently in and get a 10yr / 5yr or 3mo driving record which ever they are asking for.

I doubt you will get hired without one. Go to either CA DMV online or a local branch and get the Ambulance Drivers Handbook give it a read and apply for the ambulance cert when you do your CA license.

The green card is your MD exam and you can not get your ambulance certification from CA DMV without it. Go to a local clinic or MD to get one. The form can be obtained both online and in a local branch office.

Ca requires NREMT for initial certification, go to CA EMSA website and view other requirements and fee's to get your state card. Local accred will be done at whatever local LEMSA you plan on working in, you note SoCAL so be ready to dumb down for work and to play mother may I for anything depending on where you are.

You probably should go ahead and get your drivers lisence transfered to CA. I think you can only use your out of state for 90 days or something. Depending on your age you might not get hired on to drive though.

I would like to ask though, how come you want to move out to ca for work? Ca, especially LA and on south is one of the worst places to ems. Low pay, low job security, high bs, high cost of living. I have been ambulanceing for too long now and I have neen thinking to move to a more ems friendly sate. Just today me and my buddy found a job posting for ambluanceing out of tx paying doubble what I am makeing out here. Unless things are vastly different for you Ps

I had to jump through all these hoops a few years ago when I transfered here. All in all it totaled around $750.00 by the time I was done. And this was just so I was able to apply for a part time job. They are easy hoops , you just have to do them in order. Get your CA DL first. then get your ambulance endorsement. You will need your CA DL # before you can complete the Green Card. You will need your school completion cert or college transcripts for CA Medic Cert.

Good luck!!!!

I grew up out there and I have family out there. My wife and I are wanting to move back. What part of Texas are you looking at? What company?

Great! Thank you! I'm flying out there for a visit soon and will probably get my CA DL while I'm there.
