I am 17, going to school for EMT. And here in Florida you have to be 21 to conceal carry. But there are some exemptions such as LEO or military. My question is does EMT exclude and allow me to do so?

Thanks in advance.

The vast majority of EMTs/medics are not allowed to carry on duty. So I highly doubt you would qualify for any exemption.

Military is different. You have to be 21 to be a LEO in every state to my knowledge, and the same for CCW. Don't be in a rush. At 17 you don't posses the mental maturity to be carrying a firearm for self defense period, coming from a former LEO, however I applaud your desire to want to carry, defend yourself, and exercise your constitutional rights. In the meanwhile spend money on training and ammo, so when you do turn 21 you are prepared to assume the responsiblity of carrying a firearm. Also set aside money for CCW insurance.

We have a local PD officer who was 18 when he was hired. He had to have his parents buy his handgun. If I remember correctly he was on an episode of Cops telling his story

Well that's just crazy, and shame on the department for allowing that. If he legally can't purchase a firearm, how in the flying F does someone think he should be enforcing laws pertaining to said firearms.....

Again Military is completely different....

At 18 you simply do not possess the mental maturity to have that level of responsiblity. I would argue that a lot of men, even at 21, aren't capable of making responsible decisions in most circumstances. I saw it first hand while working in that field. At 21 most are full of piss and vinegar, don't understand that respect and tone will get you much further then aggression, and you're not as bad *** as an academy, badge, and gun make you feel. I am a firm believer minimum age for LEO's should be 25. Having the power to take someone's freedom away is a HUGE responsibility.....

Never heard of LEOs that young. At least in Texas, military can licensed carry at 18, though I'm not sure about purchase (handgun and "handgun ammunition" require age 21 for us "normal people"). In Texas you can defend your "castle" starting at the age of 18, you just can't conceal/open carry on your person outside of your "castle" until you're licensed at 21+.

See if Floridians can carry in their vehicles at 18. If so, there's your next step.

Poke to the bear - A LEO should be 25+ because having the power to revoke freedom is a huge responsibility, but a soldier of the United States need only be 18 with nothing but High School education? What about 18 year old EMTs who deem a patient mentally incompetent? It's not about the age. You're right in calling on mental maturity, but you can't fix that to a number without changing everything else reliant on a measure for maturity (driver's license, independence, gambling, alcohol, etc.)
