Does anyone know about this company? Specifically if they're cool to work with or if they try not to change too much about a company that they're taking over? Shift lengths?

Trying to decide what to do after EMT school ends in May. I need a general plan, but its hard when a company is taking over another company at the same time that you graduate EMT school! lol

I ask a lot of questions and I'm really sorry if I'm becoming tedious.

Uh where is it located?

Which place? The company runs in multiple areas

They take over Sioux Falls in May.

I'm trying to plan either to work as an EMT-B for a year or go straight to P-school Have 2 kids in school to consider.

I'm going B for a while just so I can work my way up and experience all sides. Dont want to go straight to Medic without experience but that's just me. :)

People have gone straight to medic school and turned out fine. Others, well not so much. Its what you think you are capable of.

My opinion? Work for a while as an EMT to see if you even like the job before spending the time and money on medic school to later find out you hate it. Try and work for a company where the trucks are staffed with a medic and emt, so you can see what they do.

Paramedics Plus is the same beast as East Texas Medical Center. The P+ division is essentially a staffing firm for local public-utility models- Sunstar, TRAA, Alameda County CA. They are a pretty decent employer in terms of paid time-off and pay (average for your area), great benefits. Local leadership generally remains untouched, local protocols generally remain normal. If they're expanding to Sioux Falls, that's more of the same, and I sense that it will generally be business as normal.

Are they 12 hour shifts only? Or do they do 10 too?

I second @Chewy20. Work as an EMT for a while to see if you even like EMS. The newness wears off pretty quickly and 90 days into it you should know if it's for you or not. I met a guy who did a "zero to hero" paramedic program and his second time on an ambulance was his last. He didn't like any of it and went back to his old job as a graphic artist. It's not for everybody.

But, it may be for you. Just taste it before you try to devour it all. :)

Honestly, I couldn't tell you. They will likely continue the system's current schedules, pay, etc. South Dakota is totally unfamiliar to me, but with the size of the city (154, 000), you're likely looking at 12-hour shifts with roaming posts (system status management)....call it 6 to 10 trucks at most for the county. There may be a few 24-hour stations, but IDK. Asl around.

Well I'll just have to hold on to my hat and see!! I really do appreciate you guys not freaking out over my plethora of questions. Call it enthusiasm I guess?

Off topic but it made me chuckle, I had to read it in Zoolanders character :D

@RocketMedic I assume you work for them? Do you like the company?

Used to work for them, they were decent.

It's a decent company to work for but the county I'm working in they are bleeding money badly losing roughing 700k a month. Equipment is decent, our rigs are hitting 130k in under 3 years and they are breaking down badly. The employees are great to work with. There are some employees that hate the company and others that just go in for work and get out. A lot of people are leaving for fire departments so we are hiring later in the months

Oh joy! So we're taking over one company only to be replaced by another company in trouble? Or are all companies in trouble? I'm getting out of school in May, going to apply for a job in August. Hopefully there will still be some EMT-B spots open.

OH yeah- are they JUST 12 or 24 hour shifts or are there different options like 10?

The company says they plan on staying past the 5 year mark but they cut cost in operations to the bare minimum so we get our *** ran into . there are a lot of rumors going on but we won't know till the county contract ends. We run 12 hour units with some 9 hour units but there is only about 4 9 hour shifts, we have bls responses that are ran with two EMTs and they do code 2 calls only . everything else is ran with duel medic or medic/ emtb

Ok, that gives me a lot to think about. I just want to work PT for a year before I do Paramedic school. I guess since I'll be bottom of the totem pole, I wont have any choice in the matter, eh? :) I'm hoping for like 2 overnights a week. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there, eh?
