Story has been updated:
The two EMTs in the ambulance suffered only minor injuries.

Officials said the driver was a man in his 20s or 30s. His identity has not been release yet. Alcohol and drugs use are both suspected is the crash.
No s***...

As someone who will soon learn to drive an ambulance, this story represents one of the scariest parts of my future profession. You can take great care in protecting yourself from diseases, but the spastic unpredictability of the universe doesn't prepare you for the random drunk/drugged/and/or texting driver. Spooky.

We almost had an EMT killed in NM a few years back after a wreck like this. One of the worst types of wrecks, because on the interstate you might not have time to swerve out of the way.

This ^

Better than what happened here in Azusa the other week, wrong way driver on the I-210 killed the innocent 19 year old, the two drunks going the wrong way unhurt and ran away (thankfully arrested a couple hours later)

Don't get me wrong, its still a tragedy that someone died, but I'm just thankful it wasn't a patient

Working graveyards for all these years, this has always been my greatest fear.

My ex girlfriend almost went head on with a drunk dude on meth on the freeway in a box a while back. All bad.

Worst part is it's not unusual to see people driving on the wrong side of the road at night here.

Two days ago, just saw a truck swerve into oncoming traffic to make a left turn, almost t-bone a car that was ALSO making an illegal left turn from the far right lane...in a busy downtown intersection in a major city, at rush hour. So much fail converging in one place. I guess if you're going to do something that crazy stupid, right in front of an ambulance is the place to do it.

I now work with her, thankfully she's made an almost complete recovery, though as I understand it, when they loaded her into the helo for the 19 minute flight to UNM, they gave her a 50/50 chance of survival to landing.

She';s actually going to have the last of the physical deficits repaired next month (aside, of course, from the masses of metal scattered throughout her body.), that being said, the worst of it was the TBI. To all accounts before the crash she was a veritable genius, and now...she's still smarter than the average bear, but nothing like she was. All in, though, I've been working with her for 2 years, and she's made remarkable improvements.

I was working here in Texas the first time when that happened. I remember it very well. I had met her back then and i met her afterwards when she started working for y'all afterwards again. Big differences, but I'm glad she's doing better.

As mentioned above, wrong way crashes are a trend here locally. We just had another one.
