I was required to get NR for BLS about 13 years ago, but let it lapse because I didn't need or care for it. I did maintain my state license. Now I'm wrapping up medic school and was just told by someone anecdotally that I would have to be active NR as BLS to be able to take the ALS test. Can anyone confirm or deny? I was under the impression that all I needed was approval to test from my school.

I never had an active NREMT-B when I went for my NREMT-P cert. My understanding is that one still only needs to meet the minimum requirements to enter P school and then upon completion, they send off their approval for you to take the exam. If your state ALSO needs to approve, then the STATE would also need to approve as well. However, that is often a separate issue. However, your program will guide you through all the steps to be able to take the exam. If the info did NOT come from one of the program coordinator people, don't trust it as it may not be entirely accurate...

You're good with your state certification! Per the NREMT:

  • Current National Registry certification or state license at the EMT level, or higher
  • Successful completion of a CAAHEP-accredited Paramedic education program (or an education program that has been issued a CoAEMSP "Letter of Review") that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards for Paramedic.
  • Candidates must have completed the course within the past two years and the course Program Director must verify successful course completion on the National Registry website.
    • After January 1, 2023, candidates are required to meet CoAEMSP Recommended Student Minimum Competency (SMC) Matrix. Note: Program Directors must verify that candidates have an SMC on file for each student.
  • Successful completion of the National Registry Paramedic Certification Examination.
