I'm considering a per diem job in NJ. Hopefully southern NJ. Anyone have any advice, tips or info they can impart?

Virtua, Atlanticare, Underwood, MONOC (ewww), and Capital if you want to head up to trenton.

Of those 5, I hear Virtua is the best.

Pay is decent compared to neighboring states, they work 12 hour shifts exclusively, all in flycars except MONOC which has their medics in ambulances.

To become a NJ paramedic, you will need to be sponsored by a NJ ALS program, and you usually need to have some connections to make everything go smoothly. make friends, learn the protocols, and be ready to call the doctor for EVERY SINGLE ALS patient you transport.

Call the doc and say, "hey I'm coming in..." or do you have to ask permission for everything? Also, I hear the per diem pay is decent. Atlanticare is close to me, I may send an app in. ;)

I think you call for everything.

Interesting. I'm going to contact a couple of those projects and see what the story is with PRN slots. Apparently all I need to do is get sponsored by a project and simply apply for reciprocity and then... bazinga!

absolutely not.

you have your standing orders, which you give. you also have your radio failure orders, which are project dependent, and can either be very restrictive (you don't speak to the doc, you can't go above your standing orders) to very liberal (you don't speak to the doc, you can give anything and everything in your drug box, as long as the doc might approve it).

however, you do need to call your medical control for every patient you treat, so 1) he or she calls the receiving hospital to give a report as to what you are brining and 2) to tell the doc what you did, and to ask him or her if he or she wants something else.

a buddy of mine worked for atlanticare, he said he loved working there, and if it wasn't for the long commute, would still be there. it is probably one of the most southern projects in NJ

AtlanticCare is the southern most project, based out of Atlantic City, they cover Atlantic, Cape May and parts of the neighboring counties

Thanks for the info guys. AltantiCare sounds like it would be cool for a part time thing... We'll see what happens.
