We received a letter that says off duty first responders do get priority at gas stations. They want us to pull up to the attendant and then show our ID or badge. This is for NY. I haven't heard of anyone trying it because no one has POVs on the disaster team.
After Katrina we were offered help getting fuel or would be given fuel if we had trouble getting it ourselves so that we could travel to work and back.
yes, there are quite a few giving priority to Fire, EMS and Police. Usually the local PD knows where they are, but they aren't always open or have fuel. Once the information is disseminated, it is usually out dated and no longer applicable.
the logic behind it is during the state of emergency (which NJ is under), no vehicles should be on the road. because EMTs are considered "essential personnel" they are permitted to be on the road, and need to drive to work.
It is only for those areas currently under a gas shortage and affected by Hurricane Sandy. Check with your local PD.
