Do you have to join the NREMT to become a EMT ?
 
You don't "join" the NREMT. They are a testing organization that administers a test, for a fee. If you pass that test, you're "certified" as an EMT by the NREMT.
 
And doesn't the school you attend, have to meet NREMT standards?
 
Are you perhaps asking about "NAEMT"? In that case, no, you do not need to join in order to work as an EMT
 
Got it... The NREMT is a private company that is "selling" certified standards but does not give you the legal permision to work as an EMT.

There are a number of states(most) that use the nremt as their testing agency. If you want to work in one of those states than you will have to go through the nremt process. The state will then issue you a license once you get your nr certification.
