Hey Guys,

I recently became an EMT-B, and graduated on the top of my class. Was a tough year, but I pulled through it... mainly had other classes going on, as EMS is not my ultimate career, but more as a means to an end. I am in med school, and well, I'll tell you honestly guys, taking a course in EMS was a great start for me. It definitely helps; I understand that there is a great disparity in the EMS education provided to students from state to state. I found that some states have made it ridiculously easy, and well, some made it very difficult, like Illinois (where I studied), Indiana and a few others.

Mainly, I wanted to say, if I can be of any help, please feel free to ask. What I would say to both EMT-B and Paramedic students alike, is to make sure you know your Anatomy and Physiology inside and out... As a medical student, I had the opportunity to work with and help paramedic students, and I would have to say that if any of them were struggling in their classes, it was due to not having a firm grounding in Anatomy and Physiology. Forget just doing well in the class, but if you really, truly want to help your patients, learn about the human body; learn about the different diseases and how to help alleviate the problems associated with those diseases... but yes, just let me know if I can help at all, and I will be more than happy to do so. Everyone take care, and happy new year!

Hi, welcome to the club

Hi,
I'm starting med school this summer. You surf studentdoctor.net at all? I'm a new EMT and I'm hoping that med school will also really help me in the field of EMS because I plan to continue running calls as a doc. Any perspective on that?

Hey guys...

I apologize, I have been away and haven't responded to your questions... actually, I thought nobody was really going to respond because it did take a while... Yes, to answer... 2nd year in the bag here... Becoming an EMT was very rewarding for me actually; I do admit that the EMS side of things is somewhat different than the in hospital, medical practice, but they are intertwined in such a subtle (sometimes obvious) manner, it is amazing.

And also, to the last post, if this will be your first year in medicine, what I recommend is start correlating your knowledge of A&P to what you do out in the field as an EMT. Once I truly understood A&P... man... my understanding of medicine and the various pathologies, skyrocketed. I cannot stress enough to all the EMT's, paramedics, and nurses out there... know A&P like the back of your hand if you REALLY want to help your patients... it is invaluable knowledge...

I will definitely respond to many posts here, as I get time... Also guys, I think where I can help the most is to the students that are looking for study tips, trying to get through college possibly, and even pursuing health care careers not restricted to EMS... I can definitely guide you all to the resources that helped me and many of my colleagues. Just ask me, i'm here to help...
