Hi everone!

Tomorrow I have my first of 4 ride times. While I'm really excited, I have a few questions mainly about eating.

Because I'm going to be there from 8am-10pm, will I be expected to help pay for meals? Can I bring my own meals? Will they invite me to eat their food? Will I be expected to help cook?

When I did my ride alongs with a department, I gave the 10$ and I got breakfeast, lunch and dinner. But pack a lunch just in case.

Are you going to be riding with the local fire department? When I did my ride time with the local fire department, I was invited to eat with them and I even chipped in some $ to cover my portion of the meal.

Station or individual truck?

If it's a station, you'll probably be expected to kick in a nominal feel, like $10-$20, same as everyone else does.

If it's an individual truck where you don't have a station, good luck. ;)

I plan on bringing my own lunch (and probably dinner too).

Yea, its local. About 5 mins away from my house

I'd call and ask them prior to your ride time. I found by eating dinner with the crew and participating in the sharing of the meal, it allowed me to get to know the crew better, which turned into extended ride time for me on that particular shift! :)

If you're going to a station it never hurts to bring bagels/donuts/ice cream with you.

If you're on a truck all day, bring your own food (there might not be a good time to buy it), and if possible maybe offer to buy the crew coffee or something like that.

They get mad at donuts here... They say they aren't cops and give you a hard time... but they eat the donuts non the less

Our dept has a full kitchen.. On my first ride along shift I threw together a tater tot hotdish (that's Minnesotan for casserole) and brought it in..

You'd think those guys never ate a homemade meal before.. <_<

+1. When you show in the morning bring coffeeand donuts. Score some points and do some work with the crew, clean the bay, restock the rigs, and ask questions.

While its a good idea to study, always be involved at the station. Fire guys love to cook. If you forgot to bring money, help out with the meal and the cleanup after. Cooking is pretty simple, so its fine if you never done it before

I just got home and things went well. 3 calls, 1 transport. We went to visit a preschool and when the kids saw us they started chanting "SAVE THE WORLD, SAVE THE WORLD"

It was pretty cool.
