Hello out there,

I am a Los Angeles County accredited paramedic who has resorted to leaving the field to work as an EMT for a hospital due to compensation and benefits. I had a real passion for what I did and experienced on an ambulance, but I needed to make adjustments to support my wife and young child. I am currently making a higher salary working as a new hire EMT basic in a hospital, compared to what I was making as a two year field paramedic. I want to get back out in the field and work, because I feel like all my training and experience is not being utilized.

If you are a local paramedic, can you let me know what your company is offering salary and benefit wise so I can see if there are any other options out there other than my current job.

Thanks, greatly appreciated

Look north to Kern County. Lots of LA County medics and EMTs come to work in our county. If you'd like more info, don't hesitate to PM me.

Bowers has the largest private als division in LACo they start at $20 an hour full benefits. Check them out.
Also in OC alot of places are looking for medics $18 hour and up doe. Good luck!

@gonefishing is on the right track. Lynch is like $15/hr to start then $17 after year employment. PRN isn't bad they're a couple bucks short of bowers pay but i heard they're a good place too.

but with a family in mind aren't you better protected being employed at a hospital? i understand you had to make adjustments for the family but going back into the field you still have to deal with private amb company drama. losing contracts, flexed off, not getting shifts covered when you give them away, crappy pto compared to a hospital?

and what do you miss about LA county private ALS? skills? the only thing i practice everyday is my assessments, customer service skills, and charting. If you wanna do skills then OC is where you'd wanna go. Lynch does a bunch of ALS snf to ER's i hear. You'll get to do "skills." Bowers primarily caters to kaiser.

I'm not trying to talk you out of it. You and I seem much the same. 911, IFT, a BLS call... sure I'm still a medic at the end of the day. I just don't have a family to think about so i can deal with the cons of being employed at a private amb company.

Bowers is looking for PT medics

good luck

I second the advice to go to Kern County. The pay isn't too bad. You run with BLS fire. From what I hear, All around a good company. I have a buddy that commutes from LA and does 48s out there.

It's hard to point you in the right direction. If you worked at ArmenianMedicalTaxi as a medic making $12hr and now make $15 as a EMT tech. Go to Bowers. If you work as tech at say, kaiser making $22hr with benifits. I'd just get a part time medic job somewhere.
