loans and bad comments

Stephen, that sounds like a great deal. At least you will get tuition back. Better then nothing.

Unless there is a change in their pay scale, I may not contract....I could make nearly twice as much else where for a few hours less a month. I hope they adjust their payscale (It's in negotiations with the board I believe) But even if I don't contract, I am an honorable person, so I will not forget their generosity and will still pull shifts for them

My company sponsored 6 of their EMTs to go to Medic school.

5 of them failed the National Registry...4 times.

That's why they aren't sponsoring me and paying my tuition up front, instead offering me reimbursement for a contract AFTER I complete the program and get licensed.

I have worked for this particular district for 2 years prior to my medic program though

Wow, it's nice to see a man with convictions. WTG

Why is it, do most people fail? Is it lack of studying the program, ignorance, or is it that advanced beyond the avg. scope?

I can only speak of the various programs around my area: The ones I know that don't pass the registry is due to the program they chose. While its the appropriate curriculum, the degree of education they receive is sub-standard and rushed

I'm going to second poor programs.

I was fortunate to be in a really good program. Others aren't.

That's why choosing the right program in your case is so important.

Back to the original question regarding funding.

With everything going on right now, you will be hard pressed to find a lender, however I know of a place that you may be successful at.

I am a lender myself and I work with other co lenders in order to reduce our risk but still assist people like you get a loan at a reasonable rate.

All loans are for 2 years and the interest rate will vary as all the co lenders outbid each other until you get the lowest possible rate.

Check out prosper.com and fill out all the information. If I see you there, I will loan you some money. It does NOT cost you a dime to do this!

All this site is, is people like myself bidding on loans for ones such as yours.

For example, you state how much you want and why you want it. You also reveal your credit score, bills, explanations for your situation, etc. Word of advice: PICTURES always help. We like faces to the story.

People will also ask you several questions for clarification as well.

The site will start your loan bidding, say around 26% interest. AT that time, all the lenders start bidding for a piece of your loan. I will bid 50-100 dollars at 25%. Someone else will bid lower and then I have to rebid even lower. Eventually your loan is bid down to a nice rate and your loan is fully funded.

You could have anywhere from 10-50 people supporting your loan with their money. The website then collects that money from each bidders account and awards you the loan. You will pay the site directly and we sit back and collect interest as we fund other loans.

They also have 3 collection agencies should you choose to default on your loan.

MODS: This is not advertising for a website, this is informational so someone can get funds for school. I make no profit off of this unless I happen to be one of the lenders on that particular loan and it takes me 2 years to realize full profit anyways...LOL.

If you need to delete the name of the site, no worries and if anyone else needs info, please PM me offline.

Suzi, please remember this is a forum and everyone who posts here does so with the baggage of their own personal prejudices and past experiences.

Yes there are some really crappy systems out there. There are also some really great systems. Within EMS, there are some fire departments that resent the addition of EMS and behave accordingly. There are also many fire based EMS systems who do a wonderful job and where the EMS component is well trained and highly respected.

The high rate of failure of some EMT programs may have to do more with their admission policies than their program. Who's to say if they just open the doors and let the hopeful rush in with no attempt to determine their level of education, commitment or preparedness for life in EMS.

EMS sounds very glamorous to those on the outside looking in. Read this forum to see how many post the deep desire to 'help their fellow man' as the primary goal for entering EMS. Lofty ambitions with altruistic motives are hard to sustain at 3am with a 400 pound puking drunk who just took a whole bottle of Aleve and thinks you are all kinds of awful because you are standing next to a cop. Oh and by the way this is the 4th call you've run on them this month!

The school you attend can be good or horrible. There's little oversight on EMT programs that I can tell. The higher priced program may not be the best. I would ask around and find out which medics/emts are respected for doing their job well and ask where they got their training. Also, find out where those who are less respected trained. You will probably see a trend develop.

Good luck with your choices and welcome to EMT Life!

akflight - I applied but was denied. And the two spots are gone at the tech school. Stilll openings at the upstateems.com sight. It is accredited and cheaper and I know I can get in money wise b/c of there program but the lieutenant says it's a lesser school. Help. I don't want to start at the wrong program. It's the basic and I know the spots won't be filled up for emt-i. I want to start right.

it may be different in every state but I was under the impresion that if you are affiliated with a volunteer company your classes were free?

Confused...

are there no local area community colleges offering an EMT class close enough for you to go to?

You shouldn't need much in the way of financial help to take a class at a community college, tuition runs what? 20 to 25 bucks per credit hour? Typical EMT class is 5 credit hours for one semester. Books and other stuff will run another 150 or so.

Why do you need to go into hock to attend a class for a job that pays less than 10 dollars per hour on average?
