Hello my fellow EMS providers. How many of you guys and girls have your own private liability insurance for acting as an EMT on and off duty?

Do any of you have any suggestions for where to obtain a quality and reasonably priced policy in the New England area? Perhaps a policy that covers the EMT for acting as an EMT as well as conducting first aid training?

Thanks all, be safe!

First off, understand that the general consensus around here is going to be stop acting off duty; and if you simply must, never forget that you are a first responder off duty, regardless of your level of certification. Perhaps in some states or jurisdictions this is legally not the case, but even if you live in a place where you are authorized to practice at your level on or off duty, you will not(should not) have the equipment and will not have the support system in place to be providing care beyond first response. A bandage, fine. An ice pack, sure. When you start considering where you're going to get your personal O2 tank filled and how to get your personal AED serviced, you're over the line and really need to bring it back down to earth.

Second, HPSO is a great place to get individual lability insurance. It should cost you ~$100 fro the year and is a prudent thing to have to cover you ON DUTY.

HPSO. It'll cover you as an EMS provider and you can obtain a rider for instructor work.

I had HPSO when I practiced as a street medic. But I wonder if a general personal umbrella policy might not be a better idea?

I had HPSO when I was in EMS full time, and teaching on the side. Now that I'm no longer on the ambulance full time, I have let it lapse.
