Hi everyone. Brand new to the forums.

I got my EMT-B certification via night classes from a local community college while working full-time. I originally did it just because I love emergency medicine, find it interesting, and have always wanted to do this.

I am now wondering if it is at all possible to just work one Saturday a month or even one weekend a month. I can't leave my full-time job behind because it pays the bills; but I would love to put my learning to use and help people.

Do you all think an employer would consider this sort of time? I feel like it might not be possible just because a lot of employers have extensive training requirements and I'd be brand new to the field. If it's not possible are there any volunteer opportunities I can take advantage of that would use my skills?

Thanks for taking the time to read and really hope to hear back from some of you.

Hopefully someone will come along that knows the area, but I would only look at volunteer opportunities or working for a company that does special events. Most ambulance companies are going to want a bigger commitment then a weekend a month.

I've tried finding volunteer opportunities through the internet with no success. I've tried Indeed, Monster, and volunteerems

I've also looked through a few misc. generalized volunteer websites hoping to find some roles that would utilize EMT-B skills but most of these organizations want volunteer nurses or MDs.

There are companies out there that will hire part time employees. The issue, as you have noted, is the initial training period. Most companies are going to have around a week long orientation and a week of third rides, at minimum. Some may be less, but to me at least, that's a red flag. Many places will much longer new-hire programs as well.

I can tell you that in the Chicagoland area I know Superior Ambulance has no problem hiring people who only plan on working PRN. There is an initial week long orientation and then you are required to do at least three ride days as a third rider. But, after that as long as you pick up at least one shift a month they wouldn't be any more demands on your time. I know that they are always hiring, and if you can get past wearing the silly tie it may be something to consider.

What company did you do your ride time with? You can do a once-a-month ride-along with them.

I wish companies would start hiring per-diem employees. I understand it can hurt and take hours from part time employees, but when understaffed and calling full time employees once a week and asking them to pick up shifts to cover the 25 open shifts we have every day, starts to get old... I think per diem would help fix this, at least on the IFT side, sorry part timers for throwing you under the bus with this mentality.

I know its a little North, but Paratech (Milwaukee, Kenosha) is listed as hiring part-time right now on their website. I believe Bell and Meda-Care are also hiring part-time in Milwaukee, but I could not confirm that via their website.
