Hi everyone! Well I had been on this site before but had a really hard time with the login , so I just made a new acct.
Anyway since the last time I was on here, I relocated to North Carolina from Texas. I've been here 11 months now. Still no job. I actually did get a job with a small transport company but that didn't last long, I won't go into details of that whole fiasco . They ended up closing the business less then a month after I started. So now I'm jobless again. Not enough experience to get a job with any of the big hospitals or even the County EMS as they go all ALS. I also found out really quick after I got here that's it's all about "who you know". Nepotism at it's very finest! My last chance before I give up completely is coming up Thursday with a rural EMS. I have applied to this place 3x. Finally got a call to test.
I'm about to loose my NREMT cert because I have not been employed for 6 months. I've decided that if I don't get this job ,I'm going to take a hostess job at a restaurant . I loved the short time that I did work and EMS in general but I'm way beyond frustrated at this point. Ok rant done!

Also consider working for a cardiologist or other MD type as MA until something opens up.

I am just an EMT basic. I am not trained to work as an MA. So that knocks me out of working in that kind of position. I have looked long and hard on all job sites and even the state site. All of the Doctors offices require MA certification in this state and usually a minimum of 1 to 3 yrs of experience. Thanks for the input though.

Some places will hire you as an EMT and train you in house for that particular places needs. I k ow when we get our EMT cert and Paramedic license we all want to go right into a 911 ambulance, but don't lock yourself into that thought process.

At this point in your medical career take anything that will pay the bills. Along the way learn as much as you can from whatever your able to get into as the experience will greatly benefit you once you do get onto a ambulance. You may even decide that you don't want to be on an ambulance once you get into something else.

He's right on this one. I walked into an urgent care the other day and asked if they hired EMTs for anything and he told me to apply for a MA position.
Looked up the scope of practice and it's nearly the exact same as an EMTs. Only thing I'd need training on was IVs.
It's worth a shot.

I have not locked into just being on an ambulance. I have looked into all options. The problem is my location, not really any smaller hospitals, we are talking Duke, Wakemed, Rex etc. the only smaller hospitals are a good distance away. Again they still want tons of experience. I have even looked in to volunteer EMS and even though the only one I could find is an hour away, they are full and not accepting new applicants. Looking at closer vol services I would have to go through fire training which holds no interest for me at all. I have even tried all of the transport companies. I like transport! I'm totally ok with that. I apply and then hear absolutely nothing.

Do you follow up with the places you have applied to?

Oh yes! I call and email. The place I am going to test at on Thursday I have actually applied to 3x. Most applications are online and say not to call them , they will call me if interested. Pretty blatant. Others I have driven over an hour and hand delivered. I get the general email response "we will contact you if interested" . I have gone to all surrounding counties and pulled up info. Applied where they were accepting. I applied at a transport company and the response I got back from them was " we don't hire people that live over 45 mins away" I am an hour and 8 mins. Really?

Have you tried Rx Urgent Care? They are right off of Durant Road

There is also Optimus (sp?) Urgent Care right on Six Forks Road.

My mom used to work both places.

Yeah it really sounds like your in a bad area ATM for you long term goals unfortunately.

No, I don't drive those roads much but I'm very close to both, thank you for the info . I will get on the road tomorrow and check out both of them. Thank you so much! :)

I'd say give the fire volly a shot, you don't have to stick with it, just get enough experiance. Who knows, you might even like it.

You could also try to get a job at the ER as a scribe. I haven't done it but I can imagine if you keep your ears open it could be fantastic experience.
