Last night was our 49th annual Installation Dinner at the FD. It was at a different place than in prior years, I felt it wasn't as good (food and service wise). What kind of dinners do you have? What are the budgets like? When do they occur?

Around here most dinners are Jan/Feb but occur as late as May. I have 2 more to go to so far this season (the ambulance corps as a member, and another department as a visiting officer).

We have our annual awards banquet (held in Dec.), our Fireman's Ball (held in Feb.), and our new Annual Golf Tournament (held in April).

We have a Christmas get together in Dec. and an awards banquet in the spring. Both of these are catered.

We have a Christmas supper for just couples in Jan. Then in Aug. We have a Picnic which include couples and children and includes our awards which usually is just if we have someone leaving the squad. We do a fundraiser in the Spring for the community. Our Christmas is held at a local resturant. And our picnic and fundraiser are catered.

Around here installations are a big deal. Our district budgeted $16,000 for it, and the department is kicking in up to $2,500 for overruns. It was at a Marriott and included a coctail hour w/buffet, seated dinner, awards, installation of new officers, and a dj & dancing.

Ours is relatively small compared to other departments because we only have 60 members - some other depts have 100 - 120 members.

During the year we also host a huge 4th of July parade & picnic, summer department picnic, kid's holiday party, and adult holiday party.

No installation dinners. We bring Trainees on whenever we have a sufficient number to make a "class" (usually 4-8) and they've finished their background checks, and we bring them up to Probie usually at the December and June meetings with a little ceremony including the oath and badge pinning.

We do an awards dinner in November and a Christmas dance in December. The awards dinner is a joint event between the department and the Volunteer Firefighters' Association. All current and retired members and their spouse/guest are invited, along with some VIPs (City Council members, city management, etc.) The department gives service awards (5 year increments) as well as three special awards: an EMS Award (for most hours staffing the ambulance), a Utility Award (for most hours staffing the utility truck) and Firefighter of the Year. The Association gives thank you gifts/certificates to the Association officers and anyone who chaired an event committee (pancake breakfast, Christmas dance, etc.). The budge is around $5,000, split between the Department and the Association.

The dance is more of a fundraiser and is a big public event. We mail 4 tickets to everyone in town (and a few surrounding areas), which they can choose to buy for $2.50 apiece. A lot of residents buy the tickets as a donation but don't attend. No food, but we do a cash bar and have some snacks, and provide live music. There's also a big Toys for Tots drive with it.

We also generally do a retirement dinner for any long-term members who retire. For shorter-term members, their crew at least will usually do a dinner or something on their own, but the department usually only gets involved if its a 20+ year member.

Lastly, my crew does have a tradition of a Probie doing a dinner/party for the crew before or shortly after he/she gets off probation, the tradition being the Probie has to cook something (in other words, no catering or going to a restaurant). Other crew members will usually kick in some money or bring other food/drinks, depending on what help the host needs. I just did mine back before Christmas.

Yes sir.

Although our department always does the parades (Christmas, Fourth of July, et.) we only have one big dinner a year - the fireman's ball. It's a big all-day event, lunch on the grill, sort of a company picnic kinda thing. But when evening comes, so do the kegs...we have catered dinner and it becomes an excuse to make fun of everyone for all the dumb things they've done around the station all year. :-) Good times.

Yeah - my one squad has a slide show of all the "good" calls, and most of the dumb moments - like when our ex-EMS LT. backed the Deputy Chief's personal vehicle into the engine....her "gift" was the rear bumper off the chief's F-150.

and, of course, it is also a time to recognize those who HAVE NO LIFE but to Volly. ;) ;)
