if you could recommend one book...

Shelves full of books we don't often use...

"Where War Lives", by Paul Watson.

http://www.amazon.com/Where-War-Liv...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1272735414&sr=8-1

The author talks about his visual and emotional experiences while a war correspondent in some of the worst areas of the world at the worst times. Some personal stories, but much of it touches on a feeling of helplessness to stop violence and suffering, and dealing with those feelings.

Anyone who works EMS in an impoverished urban area can relate.

The 60 Second EMT is a little dated, but it's presented in more of a narrative format, not a typical textbook. Remember, it's NOT about the medical knowledge, it's more about integrating what you've learned with clues about the patient's environment. That is it's strength, and why it's good for EMTs and Paramedics alike.

People Care: Career-Friendly Practices for Professional Caregivers by Thom **** and Friends (including often familiar name Steve Berry) is an AWESOME book. I wish I would have had it in EMT school and I would make it mandatory reading for EMT and medic students if I could.

With chapters such as "Professional Etiquette: How you show your respect for people" and "Dark night of the soul: caring for people whom nobody else cares about," this book presents a realistic picture of EMS and addresses the issues beyond the simple science and ABCs.... you know... like the fact that we are dealing with other humans.

One part, that I absolutely love, breaks down EMS this way:

The E stands for Emergency. Not ours, but other people's. As a result, the emergencies that we face will always be defined by their owners, and not by us.

The M stands for Medical. It doesn't stand for Me, and it has nothing to do with More Money for fire trucks, More political power or More public recognition. EMS is not just a public service; it's medicine. It needs to be driven by MDs, and not MBAs.

The S in EMS stands for Service. It has nothing to do with self esteem or any other kind of selfishness.
