Just before I got off shift today at the PD, I was dispatched to stop a car that was tailgating an ambulance.

Dispatch let me know they were following a family member that was being transported to the ER. The EMT on board was the one who called the PD.

I set up and waited , and sure enough, as the ambulance was running Code 3, here was a car not 10 feet behind them, flasher s on and running red lights etc.

I pulled the car over (they didn't want to yield at first) at tried to calm the frantic driver and his passenger. I explained to them I would escort them to the hospital, but NOT with lights and sirens.

We got to the ER, I escorted them inside so they could start the "info" process to get their "doper" son signed in.

I even went back to let the ER staff know that "family" was in the lobby.

Anyway, by the time I got to the PD, some #%$&Q&!!!! had already called in and said I was an A%$ for stopping the poeple.

Sometimes............

Well you know.

So, wait. Lemme see if I have this right. The people that called to complain would rather the family of the person in the ambulance be allowed to drive with no regard for their safety, the safety of the resuce workers attempting to save the live of the druggie son, or the safety of all the other innocent drivers on the road who are unaware of that the idiot in the car behind the ambulance had no regard for the lives of anybody around them.

Hmm..sounds like someone needs to have someone they love walk into the path of that reckless person driving that car. Maybe their tune would change then.

While I was a FF, we were transporting a code. The family was doing something similar. The paramedic on the unit told his EMT to pull over. He got out, went up to the car behind us and informed them if they did not get off of our a$$ and start driving more carefully he would not allow that ambulance to drive one more foot down the road. (Not exactly an exact quote, but there might be children reading this)

They did back off.

I call PD when people tail gate the ambulance. Sometimes I'll have the driver pull it over and tell the family to back off a bit or turn their hazard lights off.

In PA it is illegal to tailgate an ambulance w/ Hazards on. They aren't a warning device, they are a device to be used when the vehicle is in a hazardous location.

I hate when people:

Tailgate us to see what is going on inside
Family tailgates the ambulance to keep up
Family follows us w/ hazard lights and passes people when we do

I don't care how they feel, before we leave the scene, we tell them... Don't follow close, obey the law, don't pass us, don't pass when we pass, don't use the hazard lights.

If they fail to follow that, I have no problems calling the SP's.

This is the kind of stuff that burns folks out. No matter what it is a darned if you do, darned if you don't situation.

I do have to give props to the FF that told them to back off. I think that is pretty darn funny. :D

Yeah, see the people that call and complain, complain all the time. I was already hacked because a lady called in a report of "A suspicious vehicle" at the projects.

Heck, they are all suspicious there. Anyway, I get there and the lady begins with all of the racist comments and I got hacked. She was mad because mexicans this and mexicans that...... "A Mexican parked that Navigator and got out in a hurry" She went on to tell me it didn't have any plates on it.

I walked to the back of it and low and behold there was a NEW temp tag in the window. Anyway she was mad because I wouldn't tow it. I told her it was private property and the vehicle was not involved in a crime. She got mad and told me I was just like all the other cops we have that wern't going to do anything about the "Mexicans".

My answer "Your right, as long as they follow the law.!" I left........

It must be the heat.............

Glad to see I am not the only grouchy one today. :P

Thing was, I was in a great mood before that. I had a great week and all. They call it tourist season......but we ain't allowed to shoot 'em. :D

Nothing to do with the topic. Tourist Season.

We call that Flatlander Season.

In town we have a Railroad that supplies various mills, etc; the crossings are not gated. So they have a guy that comes out of the borough hall in a "crossing guard" vest and flags people down. They have plans to gate it in August, because we have came to find that the city folks are too stupid.

The crossing is an integrated surface with white lines, it kind of looks like a really big cross walk. I was in the barber shop watching these city folks walk around main street aimlessly. There are flashing lights on poles like traffic lights over the crossing and a tiny siren to warn people. Right at the cross is firehouse #3. I can't help but to laugh at these stupid people. People flock out of the shops to watch the train come through, as usual. It kind of curves out around town, and comes at Main St. at an angle. SO you can't see the train until it is ON the street. A whole group of people come walking down the street, and look up at the signal; now about 50' from each side is a "RXR" sign. But with the rubberized crossing, you can't really see the rails, so I guess, if you were stupid - you wouldn't know what it was. Well, I leave the barber shop and I'm standing there waiting. And the siren goes off, warning that the train is 100 yards from the street. These rude city folks push through the crowd and say "Hick firemen, they still use a siren". Remember, the fire station is right there. So they walk out into the street, look up and say "that must mean people should stop for the fire trucks", So they walk out ONTO the crossing and stop looking at the firehouse. A guy in a big van with Jersy plates asks what's going on, So he stops ON the crossing to. They are all looking at the firehouse. The crossing guard was standing in the crossing as the train came along to a stop - SOP is that they stop and then go slow - Just in case there are a bunch of flatlanders on the tracks.

One of the women ask, "well, are they going to respond?" Another asks me what was going on. "I say, Frieght train is gonna hit a bunch of tourists and a van". They reply, Where?; On the Railroad Crossing. The guard walks out and yells, get off the crossing. So they walk to the other side and stand waiting ON the tracks. One of their children bends down and is playing with the rubber crossing through the sidewalk. The siren goes off again, noting that the train is at the crossing, the people turn and look at the firehouse. About this time the roar of the train is obvious, yet, they are still looking at the siren. They got the point when they slammed on the air horn, yet they didn't move until the guard went over a physcially moved them from the tracks. Train leaves, guard says to them, 'you flatlanders really pi$$ me off, next time we'll just run ya over".

The got in the van and left.

Now we have signs that tell people it is a Railroad crossing, home made, for the people who use the cross walk with rails.

  Ok..now that is funny stuff.

Have to laugh though. I live in a tourist town also. On the gulf. Emerald Green water, snow white sand.

I just love it when people come into the ER for a Sunburn. About 99% of the time our conversation goes something like "Well it was only XX degrees and it didn't seem that hot"

I usually reply with "Well your charge for the ER today is $200. Your responsible for XXdollars. Sure would have been cheaper to spend the 10 bucks on sun screen, huh?"

Them: "I put it on in the morning. I was in the water all day" or "Well I put it on before we went to the beach. I didn't get in the water at all so it shouldn't have washed off."

Me: "Oh. I guess somebody forgot to mention the sun reflects off the sand and is so much more intense. You really should reapply."

Them: "Yea. So its really going to be XXdollars."

Me: "Yep. And that doesn't include the charge for the doctor. I take Cash, Check and Credit Card."

Man I rake in the money for the hospital from the tourists. Gotta love'em, since the cops cant shoot'em.

since the cops cant shoot'em.
Why not?

That's why they came up with evidence planting.

Bwahahaha!! Now I don't feel as bad!
I wouldn't feel bad at all. Send the SOB's to jail, better than to get in an accident when they cannot react in time for your braking.

If you send them to jail, the taxpayers have to pay for them until they bail out! That would me you and I have to pay for them until they get out!

Some people really are stupid!

I have always thought that they should mix the concept of the off shore drilling rig with the prison.

If they put the prison out in the middle of the ocean, they can save on land, and it wouldn't cost us anything. Sure, ya gotta build the thing, but they can catch their own food, make their own power, and process their own water.

Then a hurricane blows through, and boom, they are all gone. Just put more prisoners on there, and wait for the next storm. :P

Plus.. They couldn't escape, can't swim 500 miles.

Not to mention, that a lot of jails are charging their inmates for the "privelage" to stay there and if they don't pay their room and board, they get to see the judge again.

That has got to be the BEST Idea Ever!

BTW, DT, don't feel bad, my husband must get at least 6 grievances a night.

Nice....

I give the same lecture on not tailgating me that TTLWHKR does...

The other day, running Class 3, had Mom tailgating us, my driver (a bleeping moron to begin with) ran a red light in town (no lights, no siren) after he tried to stop and couldn't see mom, she was so close behind.... se we went through, as did mom.....

I understand emotions are high with parents and other family who have relatives in the hospital... that is why I like to see if a neighbor can drive Mom/Dad/Son/Daughter to the ED after us, so that they aren't behind the wheel... Also, I like getting out fast enough that the family isn't in the car when we are pulling off..

LOL, I don't have grievances...in fact I don't think there's a word for them.

Jon, I've heard a lot of people usually try to get the family member to ride with someone else. I think it's the best way to go. Also, warn your "bleeping moron" driver. My husbands grandparents and thier inlaws were hit by an ambulance about 15 years ago here. The two inlaws in the back were killed instantly and his wife died a month later from complications while still in the hospital. He got a big settlement out of it. But the ambulance ran a red light without lights and sirens.

And his new wife since is P-S-Y-C-H-O.

I'd have had her arrested, just because.
