Hypertension in anxiety attacks?

Tachypnea: rate.
Hyperventilation: too much (can be continuous slow very deep breaths as well as panting).

Simpler-ified explanation: red cells designed to release and take up O2 within a certain pH. When the pH is too high (not enough CO2/carbonic acid) the red cells won't shed their O2 for gas exchange as well as they should. You're short on O2 cellularly but your blood is nice and red since it won't exchange (as well).

How about the writhing and cramping you see sometimes?
How about the psych or emotional issues often seen with otherwise unimpaired hyper-ventilators?

Of course it can. I see it in patients all the time with anxiety, I've experienced several times with myself.

out of curiosity, was the boy on any meds, like Ritalin or other such stimulants?

Like on stimulants where indicated by pathology or stimulants for the stimulant effect? Just wondering...

Some physiologic states can cause anxiety, including hallucinatory states, hypoglycemia, hyperthyroid or thyroid storm, pheochromocytoma. Panic or elevated hormones can cause hypertension.

re

Is that a zebra I see out there on the savanna? I kid...

Have seen at least 5 in the last year that I had to Xfer for surgery with this. Not as rare as you think, more then likely it just goes undiagnosed until someone decides to do a 24 hour urine catecholamine on them. Lol and the reason I know this is I had to be tested for it.

Do you work for Princeton Plainsboro? :)

I've seen one thyroid storm (due to trauma) and one pheo.
