We've been memorizing them prior to even stepping onto the ambulance but
how often do you look to your protocol book?

Occasionally will refer back to protocols after a call that involves protocols that don't get frequently used. The most common protocols I have memorized through repetition. Most of our care is standard to national registry standards, so when I feel I need to do something not frequently used or common practice I can call the MD at our hospital and get orders direct from them.

I think I looked at the official protocols maybe once as a basic. As a medic student during clinicals I looked things up pretty regularly. I imagine once I get some experience as a medic I'll only look things up every now and then when an unusual situation pops up. It's still really nice to have at your fingertips if you need it though - I have a PDF on my phone.

When I need to win an argument and someone does not believe me that something is or is not in our protocols.

When I need to win an argument and demonstrate how out-of-date/below national standards our protocols are...

If it's something unusual I will refer back to the protocols.

For a typical call ( cardiac arrest, basic medical emergencies, trauma etc) I have those memorized verbatim.

I make it a point to skim through the protocols in my down time.
