Hey y'all! I'm new and just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to the board. To say that I'm new is an understatement . . . I start EMT classes next Thursday! I graduated high school 26 years ago and am finishing up homeschooling the youngest of our five children within the next 14 months. Three of our children have already graduated and moved out; one graduates in a few months; and the last one will be a senior this coming school year. Both of our twin boys are work in public safety . . . one as a firefighter who has just recently begun paramedic school and the other is trying to get into mandate school while working at the SO. Our oldest child is pursuing a Christian education in Biblical couselling and hopes to be a missionary. Everybody is growing up and pursuing their dreams. Soooo . . . it's time for mom to do something she's always wanted to try . . . and she's really nervous! LOL . . . I got my books yesterday and it's a bit overwhelming. I will do 20 credit hours for my EMT-B and then an additional 7 for my EMT-I. After testing out, I have no idea what I will do with my education.

I'm really excited to have found this board and have some support. It helps having a son working for the local county FD and I've made some good friends through him too. I'm pretty sure it takes a wonderful support system to be successful in the role of an EMT.

Y'all have a great day!

How are you getting 20 credit hours for a 140-180 clock hour course?

Relax, it's a glorified first aid class. Study, pay attention and if you are not incredibly dense, you'll be fine.

It doesn't hurt.

Welcome, PeachyMom! It's great to hear that you're doing something for yourself. :)

Well . . . I'm just going by what the student handbook says. The school I'm enrolled in is rolling over to semesters from quarters this fall, so I know there are going to be some changes, but right now I'm in class 4 hours, twice a week for ten weeks. The summer classes will be 5 weeks but will be 6 hours a day, twice a week.

Good for you. I'm the opposite of you, got into EMS during high school and now am homeschooling my 5 kids, but I can identify with you!

You'll be fine. EMT class is WAY easier than homeschooling high school. Just paying attention a little bit will put you ahead of the class.

Still....it is more often a three or four, maybe six credit hour course.

when i went through emt school, it was a 7.5 credit class. also welcome to the board. there is a ton of info on here. If its relevant for anything, you can be the judge

Ditto to joe.

Except mine was 12 credits. 12 hours of class a week for 15 weeks. 1 hour clinical class a week (total 7 hours of class) with 60 hours of clinicals to go with. And 15hours over 2 days of vehicle rescue and extrication.

Hi, Peachy. I'm not far ahead of you, I am in EMT-B class now and will be done in just over a month. As for the hours, I think you might mean that you will have 20 clinical hours rather than credit hours (12 on an ambulance and 8 in an ER (at least)).

Which text are you using?

Good luck! There are lots of resources to help you.

Thanks for the welcomes, everyone! :) And for the info on the whole 'credit hours' thing. The instructor told us Monday evening that we'll be doing 24 hours on an ambulance and 12 in an ER this summer. Don't know what fall requirements will be.

Since I introduced myself, I went to my orientation for my class. On. My. Word. There have been changes . . . one week before classes start, no less. Because my school is changing from quarters to semesters and due to changes from the state, my classes went from two 8-hours classes a week for 12 months to three 5-hour classes weekly from April-August (including Saturday classes from now til August). In September we go back to twice-weekly classes. Kinda puts a glitch in my summer plans, but I'll be an Advanced EMT by December instead of an EMT-I by next April. The instructor said to put my family on the back burner for a while. Thankfully this is all temporary, though very unexpected. Life will certainly be interesting for a while.

Has anyone else done the Advanced EMT program yet? I think it's fairly new here.

Its all worth it, hope it pays off in the end.
