Greetings Gentleman and of course Ladies,

My name is Jourdan and I am new to this message board. I am in a time and place with my career where I need help from those who have been around a bit. Here's the scoop, I'll cut right to the chase..

I am an Indiana State certified Paramedic working on getting my National Registry back ( talk about a pain in the *** ). In my 4 years as a Paramedic I've worked Interfacility Transport, Inner City EMS, Semi Rural EMS, and now I'm full time at a Interfacility Transport service that occassionally does Critical Care Transfers with Vents, Drips, and all that good stuff. Oh, and they have the 911 contract for a small town that averages less than 400 runs a year. To sum it up, I am miserable and I need to get back to 911. I'll spare you the hug strings being tugged story of how I got here all that jazz, everyone has an excuse.

In January of 2011 I received a DUI, I got a lawyer, and it was plead down to a Class B misdemeanor, final disposition showing in March of 2012.

So far I have been told I am unemployable for 3-5 years from:
ATCEMS, Acadian, TRAA in Fort Wayne, Indiana, EMSA in OKC and Tulsa, MEDIC 911 in Charlotte, Porter EMS in Porter County, and honestly I need to better coordinate my resources because I am not waiting 3-5 years to get back to a 911 truck. I know I made a mistake and I will never repeat that mistake, but I am not meant to be a transport medic.

My question is, does anyone know of, have heard of, has a friend thats worked for, a company/third service/department that won't hold Wreckless Driving charges against a person? Preferably busy 911 inner city systems, but I"m willing to look at anything at this point.

Thank you all for your time, and any help you can provide would be appreciated tremendously.

None in south Texas. You may check Houston FD, though. They seem to take anybody...

Is Houston FD separate from EMS or dual role?

Dual role.

Short answer: you're unemployable in a lot of places.

Try Life EMS, El Paso.

Might there be services that would allow you to ride as a paid third crew member?

To confirm, you're looking for a respectable agency with 911 contracts to bring on a new-hire with a recent misdemeanor DUI on their record. I just don't see it happening.

I'd focus on finding a small operation that is in desperate need of a medic or go the ER Tech route.

Good luck!

I hate to say it but it's going to be very difficult. DUI's are taken very seriously and it's not something most ambulance companies are willing to look past (their insurances probably won't find you insurable either). My best advice is that if you are truly unhappy, go back to school and become something else. When you've put 3-5 years between it then come back. You'll find your chances increase dramatically when you put some time between the incident.

You could try looking into that overseas medic job or various cruise ships.

Insurance will definitely be a hurdle. I hate to say it but I'd be wary of any company who will hire you with a DUI.
