Fiance recently accepted a position at Vidant, so looks like I am going to have to make the move in the next year or so. I have 3 years as an EMT and 2 as a medic, AAS in Paramedicine and all the all the alphabet soup courses including AMLS and NRP. I am coming from a very busy and moderately, borderline very, progressive system in SC with a pretty large degree of autonomy. I have done a fair amount of research, however am looking for some more input. I have already accepted that I will be taking a large pay cut and that most eastern NC systems don't have the call volume that I am used to. I am really trying to avoid ending up a system that is stuck in the "dark ages" and is not open to new ideas.

I know about Wake and Durham, however with 12 hour shifts that will be a little too much drive time. So far the only place that has really caught my eye is Wilson county, however there is not much info readily available. I will be contacting some services in the area over the next few months and am wondering if anyone has any info on the neighboring counties, or suggestions on which ones to research.

only to save myself some earlier postings.... https://emtlife.com/threads/moving-to-nc.46197/#post-654193

and https://news.ncems.org/employment

Since progressive is often a subjective term (as is busyness), I would say look at Nash County EMS. Most of NC's baseline protocols are pretty progressive (IMO), and the medical directors typically give their medics a lot of autonomy.

you need to remember much of NC is rural areas. Or a dense city (big is a relative term) surrounded by rural areas. And there is a lot of middle of nowhere in NC. EMS is a county responsibility, but there are some franchise situations (semi public/private agencies that follow the county protocols) and fire departments that exist too.

It all depends on what your objective requirements are.

Thanks, I have read through your posts concerning NC in the past. NC, as far as I can tell, isn't much different from SC. County ran, cities surrounded by rural areas etc..

As far as call volume, I am used to 8-10 calls per 12hr shift with transports ranging 10min-1hour. It seems that aside from going fire with City of Greenville, most surrounding counties are exceptionally slow and rural. I will check out Nash county again, most of these services have very little info available online which is why I have reached out here.
