SO here's the deal, I am an EMT-B IV Colorado licensed since 2007, but I do not have a drivers license. I have done the hospital thing and am currently working as a tech in corrections. I want to get on a rig but I have yet to find anyone who does not require a good driving record. I am enrolled in a p class starting in jan and need something that could be opposing the modified kelly for class. I know this is pretty specific and that's probably why I'm having trouble finding anything, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Why don't you have your drivers license?

I got a DUI. No criminal charges b/c i wasn't technically "driving". But DMV calls sitting in the drivers seat with the keys in the car, not the ignition, a DUI so I need a blow and go for a year and haven't had the cash.

You'll find it nearly impossible to get a job as an EMT-Basic with a DUI. I'd continue to pursue the ER Tech/tech route.

I hate to say it but Matt's right. Even with your medic no one is going to hire you without a DL. Especially with a DUI on your driving record even if its only through the DMV with no criminal charges on your record.

Hell.... Even the local grocery store won't hire people without a drivers license, because that mean you don't have a reliable way to work. Always having to depend on people for a ride, especially with shift work, sucks.

Well thanks anyway I appreciate your time. I'll just keep plugging away and something will come along that will work out, it always does.

Get your DL back, keep after it, finish medic school and see if you can land yourself a better ER Tech job and once your DUI drops off your driving record you'll be golden.

I know it's not exactly what you want and will take a while but if EMS is truly your passion it'll be worth it in the end.

It's all good. It's been 5 years already and I haven't let it discourage me yet. By the time I'm done with school I'll have an unrestricted license, just getting a little impatient after so long. Thanks for the encouragement. The prices you pay for being young and dumb I suppose. Could have been worse.

Depending on the state it's usually 7-10 years, 7 being the norm from what I've read.

Trust me, I feel you about being young and dumb. Still am young, not quite as dumb.

Yeah I know. I'm just glad it made me grow up and move in a different direction with my life. I've kept all my certs active, continued with my education at every opportunity, and kept at it, so once I've done my time I don't have to start all over. I love this field, I've never felt like I was meant to do anything else so I will do whatever it takes. For as long as it takes.

My boss gave up his DL because of too many DWIs to keep drinking.

What impresses me is your attitude. Alot of people would either down play or make light of what happened. It sounds (and looks) like you've taken responsibility for what happened (thankfully nobody got hurt) and you're willing to ride out the consequences until you can get back behind the wheel.

I think you're a very good example, especially to the younger EMTs out there, who think a DUI or minor drug charge is not a big deal and that everyone should wake up to the 21st century.

Keep up the good work man. You'll get that DL soon and be on a rig in no time. Especially with your attitude.

Take care

HAha! Jail Med, how's that working for you? I did 20 years of it.

It's cool, good experience I suppose, a lot more of trying to figure out who's faking for a day in the hospital which gets a little scary, every once in a while you get someone you think is full of it and it ends up being the real deal, I get to do about 20 blood draws a day on people with no veins so that's cool. Not really where I want to be spending my time though. Been putting in apps for an er tech with anybody with an opening.

I don't know how you did it for 20 years I think it would be too easy to get jaded on humanity and people's delusions of how life really is. I've found that you become very dependent on signs and not symptoms. If it doesn't have a quantitative value it doesn't mean much to you.

5 years ago you should have your license back. Follow the court orders, pay your fees and follow the steps at DMV.

We have employees with previous DUI's. Have to have your license to be on an ambulance.

Most people wont like this but I'm going to say it anyway. How can you get a DUI as an EMS provider? Have you not seen the results of driving while intoxicated? Not trying to be a butt hole but seriously I just don't understand after you pull a mangled body from a wreck to find they were waisted and that's what cause the wreck it should make you rethink how you are approaching life. Look at the family that got hit head on by an mvc and you have to tell them your 8 year old girl in the back seat is a bag of jelly because the guy who hit you was drunk but he's ok. That doesn't motivate you to not D&D? I applaud your desire to help people honestly but I find it to be contradicting that you have a DUI and endangered a lot of people.

Seriously this thread is over a year old. I'm sure he realizes what he did.
