Hi everyone. I'm new to this website so nice to meet you all. So I live in ca and my dream is to become a Firefighter paramedic. I attend mount sac and am currently enrolled in fire classes and hopefully by the end of the year I can be done with my fire academy and have my emt license. I want to become a paramedic reason being because I just like the field and have heard fire departments prefer firefighters to be paramedics to give them the job. Does anyone have some advice for me, wheres th best medic school to go after I receive my fire science degree? I have heard Sacramento has a good school down there and UCLA aswell. Mount sac offers it too but it's a community college so I kind of think it'll look better if I go to a UC. I thank you all for your time ad help. I am also bilengual in Spanish/English, so hope that helps me get hired on aswell.

Most employers aren't going to look at what school you went to. They look to make sure you have your certs then they might have a test for you. Then comes your proby time. During that time is when you will be fully tested. Pass and you can stay on fail or do horribly and the department will drop you.

Good luck as you work towards your Fire Science degree, Academy, and EMT school.
I'm not sure how far along you are with the AS degree but all together you are looking at a combined 4 years. However, I think it is good to be looking ahead and planning your education.

As for Paramedic School, I like your thought process. I would strongly suggest that you look into California State University, Sacramento. Their Paramedic School appears to be second to none.

It is my understanding that they plan to be the first University in California to offer a BS degee in Parmedics, and they seem to be getting very close.
Currenty, it is very difficult to get in. Especially the first time.

I understand that their most recent entering class had 60 students make it through the application process and entrance exam allowing them to sit for a interview. Of those 60, only 12-15 new applicants were accepted.

As you work toward your AS degree in Fire Science, study hard and get the most out of your Chemistry, Biology, and Math classes. Once you get your EMT, get some experience. Having a year of prior EMT experience or currently working as an EMT will give you points in the University's Paramedic School acceptance rankings.

Well, unless they know Dr. Brown and Marty McFly, Loma Linda already has them beat for a BS in EMS ("Emergency Medical Care").

the "UCLA" program has very, loose ties to UCLA and it's not a degree program.

I'm not from Cali but from what I hear Mount Sac has an awesome program.

The numbers sound similar to where I'm at. 60ish applied. 2/3rds interviewed, 12 were accepted. We are now down to 9 with 4 months to go.

I will cause physical harm to befall on anyone who claims to be a UCLA alumni because they took an EMT course at the UCLA EMS school.

The B.S. degree offered at the of Loma Linda University is different then the B.S. degree planned for California State University Sacramento.

Loma Linda University = B.S. in EMS(Program is designed for existing health-care providers--EMTs, paramedics, nurses, and respiratory therapists--with the classes scheduled on one day of the week to accommodate those who are working professionals)

California State University, Sacramento = B.S. in Paramedicine(Program is a 4 year degree to become a Paramedic-1st 4 year Paramedic School in California)

The Daniel Freeman Paramedic Program only has an association with UCLA and the Paramedic School is not on the UCLA campus, infact it is a good distance away.

I have no idea how many students actually applied to CSUS Paramedic School but only 60 made it past the application process and Paramedic Entrance Exam. Those remaining 60 earned an interview, and after the interviews only 12-15 new applicants were accepted.

So it's an entry level degree instead of an add on? Good to know.

Campus location isn't nearly as bad as the fact that it doesn't grant degrees. Heck, UCI's teaching hospital is over in Orange, and the drive from campus to the hospital absolutely sucks in the afternoon. If UCLA wanted to make it so that it was a BS degree, along with requiring appropriate science courses and breadth courses, I'd be happy to refer to their graduates as a UC alumni. They, however, aren't.

/Anteater.
//University of Civics and Integras > University of Crying Little A-holes.
///Of course it could also be University of Caucasian Isolation = University of Caucasians Lost among Asians.
//Loves playing with UC acronyms
/Also loves slashes.
