Family and Pets when Working Long Hours

This thread got me thinking. How do people get by when they have pets at home and family to take care of?

My dog struggles to make it five hours, I can't imagine 12+. I would imagine managing the needs of a family are even more challenging.

How do you make it work?

Most people I work with have a good family support system with either their spouse or their families helping them out with the kids or pets.
