Why do you go to work every day?

The healthcare system is failing us, we have combative patients, and we have endless paperwork. The real reason why I became an EMT, to help people, seems to take up less and less of my shift every day.

Why do I go to work every day?

As a teacher I am failing to create exciting and engaging lessons. The administration is failing to meet student needs. I'm failing to create positive emotional connections with all of my students. I have students who fight, swear, and yell. The paperwork, parent phone calls, and meetings are endless. The real reason why I became a teacher, to help my students, seems to take up less and less of my day.

See... as soon as you find that greener grass it goes ahead and dies on you. I think I'll call an ambulance

Well, we must be doing something right considering we live in the richest and most successful country the world has ever seen. On a macro level, nobody knows how it will all turn out in the end so lets just have some fun and do the very best we can. Humankind’s best days might be behind us or they may very well be ahead of us, I like to think the latter is true. On a micro level, for me, surviving all the bs is worth the heavenly (literally if you religious, metaphorically if your not) feeling we get when we truly help someone whether that be shocking the 46 y/o father of 4's heart back to life or more commonly helping the little old lady who has fallen and can't get up. I'll admit, early on I entered ems for the excitement and adrenalin rush but serendipitously stumbled onto this gift that is helping people (as trite as that sounds). You'll hear me :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored: and moan about the problems of ems all the time but that is only to educate and wake other providers up to our problems. In reality, doing what I do is like winning the lottery everyday. There are few professions where you can go and make an immediate impact onto someone's life. Paramedic and teacher are two of those professions and should not be taken for granted.

exciting and engaging lesson plan's huh...my best teachers were always great story tellers, have you tried this approach?...just a thought

Add on to that the sad pay and the horrible hours and you'll understand why I never furthered my EMS career.

I don't know what type of school you teach in, but when I went back to school, I saw two types of students. One was there because it looked cool, and they had to be in class someplace.
The second was highly motivated and eager to learn and get out in the field.
I am sure you have seen both, but I doubt you could convert one into the other without a real passion to do the job. You cannot make someone motivated who is not.
When I went to A&P school, my instructors said much the same thing, but in a public school, the classes are open to whoever walks in the door.
Save your passions for the people who strive for it, and try to weed the bad ones out.
Absolutly right about the pay, when I started, minimum wage was around $2.50 hr, I think I started at $2.65 and through all my years in the field, I never saw it change much (always at the lower end).
The real reason the industry pays so low is because it can- it will change when they can not attract qualified people and must raise pay-
It has'nt happened yet-
I felt so strange in my new field when I worked for over twice my old pay, and only a 40 hour week, and had time for a normal life after- I did'nt just go home to sleep!

I have been in EMS for over 25 years. I have seen a lot of change in that time. I have not always been happy about how things went, how EMS worked, or what society is doing. I will only say that it can always be better, and it can always be worse. No place is perfect. If that is what you are looking for, save yourself. While my current job is not the best, it is what I enjoy; no one can take that away from me. When it stops being something that I enjoy, then I need to find something else.
The only reason the grass is greener on the other side is that we are not there. I believe that if we changed our perspective, the grass around us would look greener also. Take another look.
