just out of curiousity, who here works at a fd or private ambulance service?
when you got called for an interview did they ask you a lot of kind of hard questions? (how do you think of your feet? could you give us situations where you had to think under pessure?..etc..)
did the polygraph test you, and what did they want to know there
and..what did you wear?:P

Private, third party, F.D. usually have about the same questions and interview technique. Personally, I have quit the "psychological" questions as I have found them worthless in getting to know the person I am wanting to work for us and vice versa on them knowing about us.

I would wear nice professional dress. If you are a male, docker type pants with nice polished shoes, sport shirt and jacket/ female nice pant suit type style or dress (with professional style). Have hair combed nice and possibly a small notebook to take notes.

Be prepared to ask questions as well. What exactly are their benefits, when will you acquire them, time off, ability to progress upwards in promotion. Insurance coverage, amount, other related questions. Of course shift times, pay (yeah ask is their an average or get paid for the full shift). Ask about orientation time.. some require you to have a full two or more weeks to complete.

As a Paramedic I will ask to review to protocols. I will ask them as well; what is their turnover rate and how many has stayed > 5 years?

Be sure to study and review your EMS text, as many will test as well.

Be about 15 minutes early, no earlier and definitely not late.

Good luck,

Do a search on this site for recent discussions of interview etiquette and procedure.

It has been illegal since the early '80s for employers (except arms of the federal government) to conduct pre-employment polygraph screenings. They have been proven not to truly measure guilt or innocence and are inadmissible in court (consider looking up the work of Saxe et al at the Congressional Office of Technological Assessment, from ~1983).

Good luck with your interview!

female nice pant suit type style

You could borrow one from Hillary Clinton.

Be prepared for drug test.

Have comfortable clothes in a bag in the car so if they decide to do a physical test you could change rather than trying to test in nice clothes.

If you do not know an answer be honest and say so and also tell them you will be sure to research to learn the answer.

Make sure, if you bring comfortable clothes, they're not icky groudy. A clean, appropriate logo T-shirt, and appropriate length shorts, or something with clean sneakers.

I actually suggest wearing a suit pants and a white shirt w/ tie, if at all possible.

Shake hands, look directly in the eyes, don't fidget, don't stutter. BRING A RESUME. Thank them for their time.

You'll do great =)

I haven't done any interviews (yet, just done research on my own), but here is a tip: DO NOT say words like "umm," "like" (unless it is appropriate), or any other similar words or colloquialisms. Also, if for some reason politics comes up, tread carefully. You don't want to offend any of the interviewers.

Good luck!

Eric
