EMT hopeful. Any chances of finding a job (CA) with a past license suspension?

27 years old. About a year ago I was pulled over for driving under the influence and blew a .09.

I was lucky in that the county in which I had been pulled over dismissed the case. So, I never even had to appear in front of a judge. I also have no criminal record. However, I lost my DMV hearing and had my license suspended for 5 months. The arrest date also shows up on my DMV driving record (form H-6).

Now that I have a valid driver's license, I want to enroll in an EMT program, yet I'm worried about my chances of finding employment after this little mishap. Your thoughts?

It will depend on the company on who they will hire but I will say you will have a hard time finding employment. Getting a DUI for the majority of companies will be automatic termination and "black listed" for 5-7 years.

You may have better luck in finding companies that hire EMTs in an attendent position only or an EMT in the hospital setting.

That's tough man. If your h6 says DUI, most companies (assuming you want to work for the big 5) will most likely say no right away when they see that.

However, I'm sure there's a lot of ift companies who will still hire you.

All you can do is try! Just find a way to talk about it during an interview.

lmao hahaha that's not what I meant! Oh boy that would be so b!tchy of me.
I didnt know what Ivan meant by "assuming you want to work at the big 5"? , what big 5 companies is he referring to?

I've seen the 5 best 911 provider companies in LA County referred to as the big 5 on here, so I just started doing it as well.

-McCormick
-Care
-AMR
-Cole Schaefer
-AmeriCare

There is a world outside of the great Los Angeles County. Check it out sometime.

5 best? Kind of hard to not make that top 5 considering that those are the only 5 companies with 911 contracts in the county....

Agreed. I'm in the planning stages of making the move out to Bakersfield and their lovely Hall Ambulance.

In my humble and honest opinion... You should forget it.

You may already know, EMTs are a dime a dozen. CA in particular is over saturated with EMT candidates. You have about a zero percent chance at getting hired with any of the big name companies and about the same chance of landing a job at one of the smaller ones - which if you do, you will regret almost halfway through your orientation week. Let alone lasting 5 years in that position until MAYBE you can get picked up by a bigger company, or go to medic school and try to get picked up as a medic, MAYBE, after a few years.

But even that is unlikely, for when they see that in your history next to a guy who's history is clean - well... You'll still be passed up.

Not to mention your suitability is going to be in question. You weren't 21 or 22 years old, and MAYBE have been able to play the "young and immature" card. You are 27; you're grown and have displayed a severe lack of judgement. Plus, you don't want to be a basic at 27, man.

If I were you I would be thanking my lucky stars I wasn't sitting in a cell, and pick something to do with my life that wasn't going to be going up against stacked odds for a $10/hr job. Go for something with a few less maybes.

Just saying, bro. Goodluck.

With a DUI this is the only Big 5 he's gonna be working at.

100% nailed it.

Hilarious. Mean, but hilarious.

I actually disagree.. If he really wants it, he should go for it.
