Hey guys,

Alright, so I have a question.

As some of you may remember, I am in college right now. I'm majoring in biology, with an emphasis on pre-health, so I'll . After that, I'm going to try to get on with Boston EMS, then go to medic school down the road, which I will have prepared for with my education (so don't yell at me for not taking EMS seriously! :P).

Here is my question. I am thinking of taking an EMT-B class while in college, and joining the EMT "club." If I pass (which I should), I will be working as an EMT for the college. Please note: it's a volunteer position as far as I know.

Is this a good idea? I know that some on here are a bit opposed to EMT-Bs, and that some are opposed to volunteers. I want your opinions, as most of you have a very good understanding of the field.

Please note, I will only be volunteering while I am at college. Once I graduate, it will be my full-time job (hopefully). During the summer, it may be my full-time job as well, unless I can only find part-time work. Also, EMT-B will NOT be my final goal. When I can (I have to work as a basic for at least 1 year for BEMS to work as a paramedic), I will go to medic school.

Thanks for your time!
Eric

I say go for it. Just do not settle. Keep up your education and you should be fine.

You might never end up working as an EMT, but you'll never regret it though.

I know the education thing is a big one. I'm actually thinking of getting an A.S. in paramedicine after college, if this is the field I want to enter (which I really believe it it).

BTW, you were one of the people I was hoping to hear from.

Very, very good point. I will probably end up taking it, but if not, I wouldn't lose anything.

Thanks for the input!

The way most colleges use basics are what the real intention for them was as a first responder. Many college groups respond and start basic care while the ambulance responds.

So with that in mind you are not stealing money while being a volly on the college campus. So I will forgive you this time. ;)

Good point about the first responder. They also do stand-by's, so hopefully it is the same deal (FR only).

Thanks for the forgiveness :P;)

Go for it, nothing to lose unless you don't continue and get stuck in that rut.

Okay, so I talked to the person in charge of the EMT class.

Here is what we decided. I will not register for the course now, but will instead audit the class. That way, I won't get overwhelmed (first semester at college), and I will be in better shape for the class WHEN I actually take it. So basically, I will take parts of the class twice. That should let me have a good understanding of the material.

I will register for the actual class next semester.
