I was actually talking to the crew at one of the hospitals the next day. They said nothing seemed wrong with the truck until the engine started making concerning sounds, and when they pulled over they noticed black smoke coming out of the engine bay. They barely had the patient and patient's mother 20 feet away and the truck became fully involved

Wow. We've had one of our Transit CCT units blow up on the side of the freeway a couple years ago. The crew said they were driving down the freeway when suddenly it lost all power, they were able to baby it to the shoulder and it just started smoking. It then fully engulfed about 3min later.
Also, we've had 3 transit CCT units transmissions completely fail during transports, one during a PICU transport where the kid was on 70L AirVo high flow and decided to drop pressures to 70/30 on the side of the freeway.
I know the ambulance in this post wasn't a Transit, but apparently the Transits are having a lot of transmission issues.

Let's ask the honest question... how often do car fires happen? how often do vehicle fires happen?

Yes, it's embarrassing for the company, but not unheard of, so if we acknowledge that vehicles do catch fire, can we also acknowledge that ambulances are vehicles too, and they can catch fire?

Even semi trucks which have to undergo more detailed daily inspection than any emergency vehicle cstch fire going down the road sometimes, so yeah, this just sounds like one of those times something failed.

All that and right now EMSA isn't held in nearly as high esteem as they used to be due to unfavorable response times. They are seriously understaffed to the point that my full time job gets mutual aided for them almost every day because they don't have enough trucks on the street, even with standing up BLS 911 trucks. Thus, any time something noticeable like this happens, they catch way too much hardcore scrutiny from the populace they serve.
