Ok so Monday I start my EMT Certification program, but I dont have a drivers license. Do I NEED a drivers license to get an EMT job or is it optional is your not the driver ?

First, welcome to EMTLife!!

In general, EMTs do need a driver's license in order to work on the road. If you tell us where you live, or want to work, we may be able to shed some light on opportunities that don't require one. The best that comes to mind is ER Tech or similar work... which you may be interested in.
My best advice is just to get your DL, whether you think you'll use it or not, it may help with opportunities in the future...

You didn't city/state where you are, but I would think that it would be difficult to get a job as an EMT-Basic these days without a driver's license.

Over the years I've seen posts of companies that don't require a license, but it seems that these days requiring one is the norm.

Sometimes a company will let an experienced medic tech all of the calls, but that isn't usually the case with EMT-Basics.

Good luck!

Surely you thought of this before you signed up for the EMT program. On average an EMT will spend half the shift driving. Even if you don't want to drive, there will be situations where you may be required to drive.

If you don't have a license, or can't get a license, then you may find employment working in the ER, as part of a ski patrol, or at a theme park.

I would email your instructor before you begin to ask his or her advice. Depending on your area, not having a license may make it impossible to find employment.

What does an EMT do at the ER or theme park, Yes I did contact him guess what he said ? His response was like "Not if your not driving" That had me thinking, he probably just wants to get his commission for enrolling me in the program oh this was the counselor.

When I'm not wrangling EMTLife I'm a teacher. Please help the profession present a positive, professional image by using punctuation. Your last reply was difficult to understand.

Take some time to search for your answers. If you search for "ER Tech Job Description" you'll find many. The same goes for an amusement park job. The information is all over the internet. I don't have any answers that you can't find in a few seconds.

I'm not sure what your counselor's response indicates, it doesn't make sense without context, but there are jobs to be had if you can't or are unwilling to drive. Just recognize that your EMT-Basic training is only a semester of college, and there are people with four years of college that are unemployed or underemployed.

If you can't drive because you don't want to, then I'd work on that personal issue. If you can't drive because of a legal issue, then I think you'll have a hard time getting a job in EMS, even if they don't require a license.

Good luck!

I suggest you speak with the instructor them self, not a counselor, as the instructor will know more about EMS specifically, and the companies in your area.

For info about what ER techs do, check out http://forums.studentdoctor.net/archive/index.php/t-191663.html

I'll let you guess what an EMT does while working at a theme park.
