Hi guys and gals,

I am finishing up an EMT-B class in NY State. I have searched far and wide but I cannot find the answer to this:

Does your State, particularly NY State EMT test score matter when applying for jobs, applying to Paramedic school and applying to the FDNY EMT program?

I have the ability to go out and score near perfect if I study hard this month but I want to know if it is worth the effort.

I know studying will only make me a better EMT, etc etc. However I plan on studying to the test and there is a difference between test ability and real ability.

I could just go on more rotations instead of studying more, so is getting a perfect score worth the effort in terms of jobs and later on paramedic entrance?

you know what they call the person who graduates dead last in medical school?

Doctor.

Same for EMS, as long as you have the card, no one will care what your actual score was.

My Paramedic program cared about 4 things: You were generally alive (and not a bad criminal), you passed their entrance exam, you passed their interview, and that you were able to pay the tuition. To get to the point where you were able to apply was a slightly different thing. That required an EMT certificate and at least 6 months verified work experience in that role. They didn't care what your score was in EMT school. They actually didn't care what your college grades were either, though if you'd taken A&P that was a bonus. That made it much more likely that you'd absorb the material and pass the NREMT-P exam. We all passed on our first attempt...

Probably with any Paramedic program, unless you were in their program, I doubt there's any way they could know what your EMT school scores were.

It's not likely to matter if you're able to pick up how the job works once you start. That said there are some places that pride themselves on difficult pre-hire exams as a screening tool, so studying now might help with the job hunt.
