Hello all, I got my EMT a couple months ago and I am working at a ambulance company in Colorado doing almost only IFT's. I want to get into a primary 911 company and get experience and learn. I have only been in Colorado for a year or so and dont know that much around here. I do know that I dont want to do wheel chair at all and I want experience. With out getting into detail I have a good resume and no problems in my history, I just dont know where to go.

Also I would not mind driving far for a good company. I am around Denver/Aurora area. I dont mind volunteer work. And dont mind volunteering at a FD if I can get on the ambulance.

Thank you

Look into starting to volunteer with the Poudre Valley Hospital EMT Reserves in Fort Collins. With some time and effort put in there, you have a shot at being hired (relief shifts initially) when they are looking for new people. You'll third ride on ALS 911 ambulances up there and provide BLS event coverage on a volunteer basis. Great place to work, but you'll likely need some experience first. Thompson Valley EMS in Loveland is also great, but experience is absolutely necessary prior to hire and they don't have a volunteer component.

If you'd like a job sooner and closer to your area, I'd look into Northglenn Ambulance. Primary 911 for Commerce City, and back up 911 for parts of Denver. They do a lot of IFT as well of course, and if you are hired as an EMT you will be doing primarily transfers at first. The good news is that by volunteering for them as an EMT you will be doing primary 911 with a paid paramedic partner. Odd system, but it works for them. Best of luck, and feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Commerce City....smells like dog food.

Every EMT starts on the wheelchair van at Rural Metro and AMR. Apparently with R/M you can be off it in about three months though.

If you want to volunteer, a lot of the eastern exurbs are combo departments. Places like Rattlesnake, Elizabeth, Franktown, and Brighton come to mind. Not sure if you have to go fire training as well though. So much of metro Denver is covered by career fire department ambulances that it'll be tough to get a 911 job not at R/M if you want to do 911. Platte Valley in Brighton hires EMTs but getting on there is extremely competitive.

God yes it does. That's where I did my paramedic internship. Just about gagged driving by the factory every morning.
