The actual reason for that is because you need to be 18 in NY to take the EMT certifying exam.

They also make you an EMT. Not a fireman.
You have to get past about 40,000 people on the civil service list if you would like to be a fireman.

Still trying to decide what to make of that. Didn't do a whole lot of reading though.
No, I did not go to highschool there. Probably would have gotten a better highschool education if i did though.
I was just illustrating there are very elaborate ways to recruit young people.

I didn't have any medical-based toys growing up.
When ever my young autistic cousin comes over, I have to hide my good stethoscope, and leave my older, spare, many-times-repaired stethoscope where he'll likely find it. The kid is fascinated with listening to his own heartbeat.

I know this feeling, I had to buy my daughter her own because she decided that she could not risk the possibility of me losing mine by taking it to work.
But I actually bought a second, less expensive one, that works better for my needs, so she inherited the black littmann master cardio and she is cool with me taking mine to work now.
