New rights for paramedics

County paramedics with specific training will be able to place three-day psychiatric holds on individuals and decide if they belong at the hospital or jail under a proposal up for consideration by the Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

Having American Medical Response workers able to make mental assessments might get emergency psychiatric care to people faster and cuts out the need to call a peace officer or doctor to a scene.

This is a very practical move. EMS providers are usually the first ones to come into contact with a person having a mental disorder. Sice there has been a huge push to de-institutionalize the mentally ill EMS providers deal alot with these types of individuals.

In Law Enforcement police officers are usually the ones to complete the affidavit for a person to be held for a 96 hour evaluation against the person's will.

The truth is police officers have no real training in a medical setting.

I think it is a great idea and will cath on.
