Just got back from the Walk for Hunger where I served as Coordinator of First Aid for Check Point 4, 9.5 miles into the walk. Despite the 80+ F weather thousands and thousands of people turned out.

First Aid/EMS went well. We had two emergencies, one of which resulted in a t/p to the local ER. It was a pretty serious heat stroke case. nemedic and I dumped about 12 bottles of water on her in an attempt to cool her down. We cut about 10,000 pieces of moleskin, dished out 5000 band-aids and wrapped 1500 knees (these numbers are highly inflated, but you get the idea...a lot!!)

Want to thank:
* nemedic, who showed up at 9am and worked until 4 after having worked an overnight shift
* Mina Thabet of Patriot Ambulance
* Dana Sampson also of Patriot Ambulance
* The nurses who came early and stayed late (Jenny and Elizabeth)
* Cataldo Ambulance who provided a BLS ambulance about 100 yards from our First Aid tent
* All the people who walked and raised money for the hungry

This was a really hard walk due to the heat, sun and humidity. The past 5 years have been rainy and cold, perfect for walking super long distances without developing heat related issues.

Now it's time for a cold shower and a nap.

Working marathons/walks/whatever is a blast isn't it?

THe numbers weren't that inflated, except maybe the knees. I think I only wrapped one or two, plus a few ankles. The heat was tricky tho. Thank god for that tent, we'd have fried without it.
@ Lucid, it was a great day.

I miss the walk... I've worked it the past few years, and it's been a blast. How did the water boil order work out for you?
I ran a bit of my own controlled chaos today... an outdoor concert/arts festival/beer party... and it worked out pretty well, but I certainly hear you. I'd love a shower, asprin and sleep... but have work to do...

Boil order didn't really pertain to us as we had walls of bottled water. This was my 6th year being coordinator of 1st aid for checkpoint 4.

And if we ran out, there was always boiling down the 3 huge jugs of tan lotion. should be able to extract some water from that.

We only went through one of those, yeah? There was no shortage of people pumping from it.

I have walked for hunger. Too many people, too many, go to sleep on a full stomach.

Booooo! Hiss!!! That was actually kinda funny.

The Walk for Hunger is again this Sunday! I am running the same First Aid Station at the Elliot Church in Newton- 7th year doing it! Would be grateful for any additional help, especially between the hours of 11-2.

Told you via PM already, but I'll be there for most, if not all of it. At least it isn't supposed to be as hot. Last I checked, forecast is calling for 70ish and sunny

Last yeas was BAD. Remember how we doused that one walker with like 12 bottles of water? See you Sunday!

Yea. Hopefully we won't get anything too bad this year. Though there was no code at the marathon this year....not that I want to deal with working one in that huge a crowd.

Looking forward to it! I can stay all day

I'll prob be there most if not all day. Working the night before. Depends on how many times I hit the snooze button. Will probably be there NLT 0900 though. Gonna shoot for 7-8 arrival so I beat the worst traffic.

I just saw this late last night, its probably too late to sign up to volunteer?

Nonsense!! This will be my 2nd year doing it, and i never signed up. If you are looking for one to volunteer@, come over to the Eliot church in newton. It's pretty much on the halfway mark. Bstone is running the show there, I'll be there, and I think 1 or 2 more local EMT Lifers are going to be there. I'd recommend getting there as early as you can, and definitely before 11, that's when the huge wave comes through

It's checkpoint 4 if you are looking on one of the official maps of the route

Alright, just some quick questions. First, do you know where the parking would be? I don't go to Boston much and do I need to really bring anything? Also what would be the best thing to wear? Would just jeans and a t-shirt be fine? Thanks again.
