This may seem kind of wierd but I've noticed since I got out of the EMT program, (and actually it started when my husband joind our SO) that our friends have been scampering off to who knows where. We hardly talk, blah blah, basically we've just been losing touch with them slowly and now especially in the last month since I've been getting excited about taking my NR.

I try not to talk too much about what I'm doing career-wise, I don't make it topic of discussion or overwhelm everyone with it, although I do mention it because I get excited about what I'm doing, but I'm just wondering if any of you experienced similar situations?

It's kind of like when your the first to have kids, they run off, that happened to us too lol.

And yes I know that if they can't be happy and supportive they're not really friends to begin with...but we're really getting low on the social scale here!

That happened to my wife and I as well so you are not alone. I think it has much to do with EMS folks leading a very exciting life compared to the 9 to 5'ers working in an office somewhere. I almost lost a very good friend because he felt obsolete. I found this out after I talked with him about it. We are now ok as we for the most part just talk about our other common interests like NASCAR!! :D

It's kind of a trade-off sometimes...I mean, there are a few people that I've sort of grown apart from since I've gotten into EMS, but on the other hand I've gained a lot of new friends. Most of my old friends are sort of in awe about the whole thing since about 90% of them are waiting tables or something like that... It just takes a little extra effort to stay caught up with everyone. Plus, everyone's really inpressed that I can patch up "that guy" that inevitably trips on something and falls in a driveway at parties ;)

Yeah I kinda get the same thing. None of my friends have careers (In fact they're just now getting married & thinking about families, I've got a 6 year lead on them) I'm not working yet so I'm out of the EMS loop but I can't really complain, without them calling me every day I get more studying in, I only have 2 classes this semester, but they're kicking my butt.

I talked to my brother and future sis in law tonight (he's SO too) and he got the same thing, I guess some people just can't handle it, I don't know why, I'm not asking them to do it, but then again most people don't make sense as it is.

True, and most people are at least somewhat territorial by nature, so I think sometimes joining another group, be it EMS or whatever, the old group is a little jealous and feels like you're trying to distance yourself from them. I don't know how many times I've gotten the cold shoulder after having to forego doing something with my old friends because I had drill or was on call.... I think after people see you're not trying to phase them out of your life, they generally become more accepting, so just hang in there!

You know being an EMT is really awesome however it takes alot out of your social life to. Where I am on call currently we have meetings once a month, every third week your on call at nights from 6p-6a and then on the weekends you are on call about every third also and are on from 6a Sat.-6a Mon. So you can't go out of town because you have to be with in a three minute mark of the garage just in case. So you have to put alot of your social life on hold for those weeks but You also got to make the best of it when you are not on call. I for one go to school during the day and teach EMT class at night on top of my call schedule. So between my friends from class we go out to watch movies even if I am on call I will try hard to find someone to cover me (usually my mother). Or we go out to eat, go boweling, or have some type of activity once in a while. Its not every week but it helps to break up the routine and does give you a social life. So I would say just take some of it with a grain of sand and then also act on your feeling invite your friends over for supper when your not on call and turn off your pager. Or go to a resturant. call them up or maybe just email them. That is what I have to say.

My "significant other" and I work at the same firehouse so on hot date nights you can just guess where we are! Movies, clubs... I think not! Sitting at the firehouse waiting for drunks to crash and domestic disputes when dates don't go so well... It's sick!

FYI, just make sure the hose is clean, because if it's been dragged in the street lately (especially in winter) you'll get something similar to road rash in places you don't want to know about. ;)

OMG! What do ya'll do with that hose????

Never mind, Don't tell me!!!
