    Job Requirements CA EMT

I wrote up a list of to-do items for a recent poster with a similar question here.

    Other jobs that take EMT's

Companies that provide medical standby at events take entry-level EMTs. Other than that and ambulance-based work, most other positions (ie: ER Tech, hospital scribe) are usually competitive and seek more experienced EMTs... so unless you've got some connections, it'd be difficult getting hired...

How do SO Cal EMT-B's afford to live down there.

When I did my ride-alongs with McCormick in LA, most of the EMTs I met had long 1-2+ hour commutes and/or lived with parents/friends. McCormick's 24-hour shifts (or more, if you swap shifts with other people) make that a bit more practical. But, it's a sad reality that fast food and retail...

    Outrageous tuition?

Not sure how it is in NV, but in CA, I paid $1200 for my EMT-B class and that was already a fairly expensive program (convenient location/time at my university). I'd definitely look into other places where you can take the EMT course, as $4000+ is ridiculously pricey.

Prn Ambulance and Pro transport-1 merging

Haha, I agree. Worst I've had was getting a San Jose to Roseville call two hours before end of night shift... we even made it into 2x pay due to traffic.

You mean that's not par for the course in IFT? :p

I am being trained by a company, but I still need help.

Thanks for the great explanation. Had learned about what to do in that scenario, but hadn't known there was a term for it.

I am being trained by a company, but I still need help.

Here are my answers, coming from a non-911 EMT in CA: 1.- As far as I know, that just means a medical call (versus a trauma/extrication). 2.- When you're a lift assist, you're not teching the call (it's not "your" patient), you're just there to help move the patient onto/off the gurney and...

Passed my NREMT in California now what do I do?

1.- Go schedule your DL-51 physical exam with your physician and have them complete the entire form. 2.- Look up your particular county's certification requirements (all basically the same; it does not matter which county you get certified in unless the county you wish to work in has additional...

Online/UCLA LA Scope of Practice course

I did my EMT course at UCLA a few months back. If you complete the little module online (linked from the main JB Course page you used for the class), you should be golden. Your course completion certificate for the EMT course should indicate your LA Scope of Practice. See the attached screenshot...

    NorCal Ambulance Age Requirement?

If you're willing to commute, I know Westmed (there's AlCo and SCCo stations) and Rural/Metro IFT will both hire < 21 yo. What a screw-up on their end for giving you an interview and then bothering to check the age, lol.

    NorCal Ambulance Age Requirement?

If they gave you an interview after having reviewed your application, you're probably good to go. A number of the ambulance companies in the Bay, mine included, will employ those under 21 provided you have a clean driving record. It's really all to do with how much it'd cost to insure you.

What is considered a BLS call in your area

Yep, most places in the Bay Area have ALS response for a 911 call, but the call may be downgraded to BLS once on scene (ie the medic drives, EMT techs). In LA County though, most places have BLS ambulances respond to 911 calls, with a fire engine that has a medic on board. If ALS transport is...

What are hobbies of EMTs and Paramedics?

Many of my coworkers go shooting on their days off; it's a very common hobby even in California. Personally I enjoy swimming, hiking, and messing with computers/smartphones/pretty much any tech.

Got stopped by some EMS guy wanting to inspect my Rig

At least in SCCo, we do have county duty chiefs who will come and do random spot checks to make sure you have all your certs, the ambulance permits are all up to date, you have the required number of BVMs on board, etc, etc. Fairly sure this is legit.

    Crew of 3?.......

It's the usual practice for our CCT and NICU calls. The 2x EMT crew picks up/meets the CCT rig with the CCT RN either at station or at the hospital, whatever works out to be faster. For NICU, the 2x EMT crew picks up the dedicated NICU rig with the NICU team, which is usually an RN, RT, and...

Working for 2 IFT companies in Los Angeles County

I know of people who worked for two IFT companies without an issue (FT for one, PT for another). Mainly comes down to whether the employer specifically made you sign any noncompete documents. Working two IFT jobs is a quick way to burn yourself out though, so be careful... besides, most...
