What don't they teach you in paramedic school?

I wish they would have at least briefly covered the fire service a bit. I know that its not their job to do so, but EMS is fire based here unless you want to do IFTs. It would have been nice to get a little bit of info regarding the fire service since almost every graduate finds work with an FD.

    Baltimore City, MD

They have been saying that for the last few recruit classes but it hasnt happened yet. I know that they have an EMS recruit school graduating soon so maybe another round of hiring isnt far away.

    Fire Department Work

It depends where you live. We only have 1 county in the Northern VA area that still keeps their fire and EMS separate, and that probably wont last much longer. Everyone else has fire based EMS so it is required to go through the fire academy after getting hired. Other parts of the country...

    What can a EMT-I do.

Depends on the state/county. Here in VA we are on the I-99 standard so EMT-I's can do everything that a Paramedic can.

What do you see right now?

^^^ Just a heads up, the AHA has removed the second dose of 12mg from the algorithm.

    Sheers

No it is definitely not just a fashion statement, they serve many purposes....mainly cutting stuff! They are cheap (read: disposable) and are the preferred tool for exposing the patient. Color is usually a preference.

Opinion: Should states limit entry into EMT B/Paramedic courses?

States dont need to have any control over the number of students. Fire departments and EMS agencies control the numbers via the amount of job openings.

Tennessee EMT-B Wants info on EMT-IV

Thats a frequently debated topic on here, lets hope this thread doesnt turn into another "experience vs. no experience before medic school" thread... Anywho, i went into medic school with zero experience as an EMT and i think that i turned out just dandy. Sure, having experience will...

Tennessee EMT-B Wants info on EMT-IV

Your best bet to get hired in a fire based system is to get your Paramedic degree or certification. I would skip the EMT-IV course and enroll in a medic program. There is a growing trend (at least in the eastern US) of hiring only/mostly medics. Its not impossible to get hired with a...

    Practice test??

There are a couple of decent phone apps that are available for cheap. I used the JBLearning.com site Paramedic exams to study for my I/99. Its essentially the same material and was very helpful. Definitely worth the money.

Opinion: Should states limit entry into EMT B/Paramedic courses?

I dont see why they would. What does the state stand to gain by limiting the number of students?

    Associates in Emergency Care

The title of this thread is misleading. Its not about AA in EMS, its about a certification program in VA called "Associates in Emergency Care"...which oddly enough is NOT a degree program.

New/paramedic to be biggest fears :s

Biggest fear? Peds has already been mentioned so ill go with my second choice...having to emergently poop while im on scene. We all know that feeling, and its terrifying.

    Color-Blind

There is no harm in looking into it. If you call around to some recruitment folks im sure they would have no problem telling you their policy. I imagine that like everything else in EMS, it varies by department. I dont know of any fire departments near me that will hire somebody who is...

    Color-Blind

Most fire based systems consider it to be a disqualifier, im not sure if its an issue with private companies though.
